1:30 AM - Heavy thunderstorms are affecting southern and eastern coastal areas, with scattered moderate to heavy showers and rain elsewhere across Trinidad, slowly moving northward. Throughout the night and through Tuesday, periods of rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast across T&T. Street/flash flooding is likely, with gusty winds up to 55 KM/H possible. Tropical Storm & Hurricane Watches/Warnings are very specific wind-based watches and warnings. They do not take into account rainfall, hazardous seas, or other hazardous weather. Hazards extend well outside of the storm's center. We know too well how quickly a single thunderstorm can spell disaster in Trinidad. #Beryl is approximately 580-635 KM wide (outer bands with showers/thunderstorms & cloudiness). The National Hurricane Center's forecast keeps Beryl's strongest winds north of T&T. Based on the 11:00 PM Saturday advisory, the center was 106 kilometers north of Tobago and 180-190 kilometers north of Trinidad at 8:00 AM Monday. So, while the very specific Hurricane/Tropical Storm Watches/Warnings may not be issued for Trinidad (A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Tobago), don't wait for an alert/watch/warning to be issued. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider what you need to prepare for a flood. Prepare for the possibility of intermittent outages, including food storage, keeping devices charged, and keeping yourself safe. The worst of the weather is expected in our region from Sunday night through Tuesday morning (Beryl will move into the Caribbean Sea by Monday afternoon, but trailing convergence, AKA feeder bands, may pose a threat, particularly severe lightning). The National Hurricane Center is forecasting devastating wind damage and life-threatening storm stage for those near the eye. The last time we saw this intensity of a hurricane moving through the area was Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and for those old enough, we know how bad that one was. The Atlantic is coming alive as we track multiple tropical waves across the basin. Tropical Wave 14, now #Invest94L, has a low chance of developing as it moves into the Western Caribbean Sea. This wave produced gusty winds across Tobago and Grenada earlier this week as it moved across the Windwards. (1/2)
