Without the support I need, I stand no chance in life. I can‘t get the support I need because it either doesn‘t exist, I don‘t have access to it, or my various health conditions make coping with the entire process impossible. I‘ve tried and failed so many times, I‘ve given up.
Whenever I think about this, I always come to the same conclusion: I would have had a chance in life, had I been diagnosed and supported while growing up. That chance is gone. The growing up is done, the damage is done, the opportunities are past, I am sick and broken.
I frequently wonder how my life could have been different, if I had been diagnosed earlier. How would knowing have affected me as a person? How would my life have gone, if I had had access to autism supports and accommodations as a child or teenager?
Growing up with autism awareness, understanding, and most importantly acceptance are immense privileges. So many of us didn‘t have that. So many of us still don‘t have that today. Those of us who have lived the difference, know how HUGE it is.
I never had an ‚aha moment‘. I had and still have a very long, difficult, painful, exhausting journey that seems to never end. I do have little moments of recognition nowadays when I see/hear other autistic people share their lived experiences that directly mirror mine.
I only started accepting myself WAY later - when I found autistic people on Twitter and finally started seeing other people going through the exact same experiences I had gone through alone, unsupported, blamed for, etc. my entire life. That was ~5 yrs after diagnosis.
What forced me to eventually stop denying my neurological condition was the suffering and disability it caused me. I needed help. Specialized help. I needed to accept that I was autistic before I could get help for being autistic. That was ~1 year after diagnosis.
I never had an ‚aha moment‘. I denied my diagnosis at first - because accepting it would have meant accepting that the suffering for which I sought help was from autism, autism never goes away, so the suffering would never go away.
I started considering I might be autistic AFTER I got diagnosed. I always knew something was ‚wrong‘ with me. I didn‘t suspected autism because I didn’t have ANY resources that would have allowed me to come to that conclusion. No internet, no autistic community, etc.
