A 28 year old woman was found dead on a beach in Goa in March 2017. She was Irish. She had no family in India, no connections here, and nobody with any power who needed her case solved. 2 Indian men spent the next 8 years on it anyway. Her name was Danielle McLaughlin. Her body was found in a forested area near Palolem beach, with multiple injuries. Forensic examination established that she had been raped, and that her face had been smashed in with a beer bottle to make her harder to identify. Indian law normally prevents a rape victim from being named. Her family chose to waive that, deliberately, so her case could be spoken about in public and would not quietly disappear. The man accused was Vikat Bhagat, a local man she had befriended. Then came 8 years. 8 years is long enough for evidence to degrade, for witnesses to move away, for an investigating officer to be transferred somewhere else, and for a case to stop being anybody's priority. That is how most cases like this actually end. Not in an acquittal. In an adjournment that never stops. The investigating officer was Filomeno Costa. The prosecution was run by the state. Neither of them had any reason to keep pushing. There were no protests outside the court. No politician needed this solved. The family were 8,000 km away and could do nothing but wait. On 14th February 2025, Judge Kshama Joshi at the District and Sessions Court in Goa found Bhagat guilty. On the 17th he was sentenced to life imprisonment. His lawyers had asked the court to take a lenient view. Her family's statement afterwards did not begin with the sentence. It began with 2 Indians. They said they were thankful to the public prosecutor and the investigating officer. They said those men had treated her like their own daughter, and had tirelessly fought for her. Their lawyer, Vikram Varma, put it simply. Nothing can compensate the loss of a child, he said, but the sentence has diluted the grief of the family. India created fast track courts for cases like this after 2012. Reuters reported last year that the planned number had been cut from 2,600 to 790. So the system did not deliver this one. 2 men inside it did, for a woman nobody would have blamed them for forgetting.
