Question for Mac devs and late-night builders: What stays open on your desk while you work? A clock, a timer, a terminal, the same song on loop? We're making something that lives there, so we're curious what earns the spot.

@arvidkahl the desire to try is where most things start. the hours come after, if you keep showing up for it.

@levelsio a rainy day, a record playing, an outlet by the table. most side projects don't need much more than that.

@alexkehr saving the little moments that feel just right, so you can see why they work. that's how good taste gets built.

@0xProbabillity open-sourcing something you built for your own home is generous. the best tools usually start as one person's quiet fix.

@cetorres read-only to full control in two days. the best menu bar apps start as something you needed in your own house. great work Carlos!

@neebarp_tech losing track of the hour when you're deep in something. you look up and somehow it's 11:11.

@leo_mercerr saying 'we didn't make it' out loud is harder than any bug. the date moved. the work didn't stop. that still counts.

Honest build note: the hardest part isn't the code. It's the hours. After work, after dinner, whatever's left. So every week the real question is what to cut so the little time counts. What did you cut to keep your side project alive? #buildinpublic

It's 11:11. You're still up. The day job ended hours ago. You're still working on the thing nobody asked you to make. Make a wish.

@ycombinator @alexandr_wang @garrytan vision is usually just a wish someone kept giving time to, long after it stopped being exciting.

@dhh @spacexai every launch like that is stacked on years of late nights nobody filmed. that's the part that gets me.

@adamlyttleapps the good-faith part is the real one. people remember who showed up honestly on the slow nights, not just on launch day.

@wesbos frames, then jeans. the best after-hours projects are the ones nobody asked for. hope the first seam is crooked in a good way.

@coreyhainesco fewer pages, more hours. one small fix after the day job, the kind nobody sees. still counts

@sweatystartup half of us are lit by a screen glow at this hour, finishing the thing the day didn't leave room for. maybe the fix is a softer light and an earlier stopping point.

@lennysan @GoogleLabs the good ones usually show up at a weird hour, long after the calendar block ended. you just have to still be there when they do.
