Today's TEO Committee. Philip Brett was correct to raise Sinn Féin's hypocrisy. Their member had just raised the issue of an internal report into Jeffrey Donaldson and asked where it was. Brett then asked where Sinn Féin's reports were into various paedophiles. For information : I wrote to Mary Lou Mc Donald weeks ago asking her party to appoint an independent reviewer to deal with various issues of child abuse that have arisen within their party. I am happy to speak to a reviewer. They won't appoint one. I'm happy to repeat Philip Brett's claims here. The Sinn Féin party has protected paedophiles. MY OBSERVATION FROM MAINLAND UK Let this sink in. I watched the video of today’s committee meeting in utter disbelief. Michelle O’Neill openly declared: I am proud to stand on the Garvaghy Road.” She was referring to the mobilisation of people onto Garvaghy Road, where 35 individuals, including elderly pensioners aged up to 80, were illegally and unlawfully prevented from walking home from church because of the blockade of a public highway. O’Neill did not simply defend what happened. She spoke with pride about standing there and made clear she would break the rule of law and would do it again, and again, and again. LET THAT SINK IN. This was not just a matter of political disagreement. It raises fundamental questions about the rule of law, ministerial responsibility and the rights of ordinary people to go about their daily lives without being illegally and unlawfully obstructed. Calling for mass mobilisation onto a road, knowing the consequences for those trying to exercise their right to walk home from church, is absolutely shameful. A Joint First Minister should be upholding the rule of law, not boasting about involvement in an action that resulted in a public highway being blocked illegally and unlawfully. Her conduct towards the committee, including Emma Pengelly, who was sitting alongside O’Neill and shares the same ministerial office, was disgraceful. There must be accountability when ministers are challenged about their actions. Public office does not put anyone above scrutiny. SINN FÉIN CANNOT DEMAND THAT EVERYONE ELSE OBEYS THE LAW WHILE ITS LEADERS BOAST ABOUT ACTIONS THAT RAISE SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR OWN RESPECT FOR IT. The rule of law must apply equally to everyone. No political party, no minister and no political movement should be exempt. I am sickened and appalled by what I watched. Michelle O’Neill’s own words deserve to be examined in full. If ministers supported or encouraged unlawful action, there must be proper investigation and accountability. MY POSITION IS CLEAR: MICHELLE O’NEILL AND ANY OTHER SINN FÉIN MINISTERS FOUND TO HAVE BROKEN THE LAW MUST BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE. No minister should be above the law. Those entrusted with governing Northern Ireland have a duty to uphold the law, not boast about actions that undermine it. If wrongdoing is established, there must be consequences. THE RULE OF LAW MUST APPLY TO EVERYONE INCLUDING MICHELLE O’NEILL AND HER FELLOW MINISTERS.
