We're live, talking about college rankings with @GerkenHeather, @LSongRichardson, @ericgertler, @AngelBPerez, @melissakorn, and Bri Woods. the1a.org/segments/colle…
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Please ask your guests whether the upcoming @SCOTUSblog decision on the use of race as a factor in the admission process is one of the key reasons for schools to move away from rankings.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn I strongly disagree about the conveniently biased view about standardized tests. There are a number of resources such as @khanacademy and @UPchieve that provide FREE tutoring for low-income students.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Harvard has a shameless LEGACY criteria for admission!
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Schools that feel so politically correct by dismissing TEST scores MISS the point that students suffered during the pandemic and their transcripts will reflect accordingly. There are resources to prepare for FREE for tests. Students who excelled in test scores are BRIGHT!
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn I wasn't able to listen, but want to reiterate - there are some great resources that use @usedgov data, including ED's own College Navigator. And for law schools there are @AccessLexInst tools. Lots of places to find data.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Not a big mystery here. Why does Sports Illustrated keep publishing a swimsuit issue every year? Because it’s a “set piece”. They are rewriting the same article over and over every year and it is their top selling issue every year.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Seems a little disingenuous for Yale to flaunt leaving the rankings when everyone knows it's a prestigious school. Less prestigious schools need impressive graduates to validate their business. They use money to get them. Yale has the privilege of not needing to do that.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Great points in this podcast. Lots of points that I have brought up since 2005! medium.com/@hiphopprez/my…
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn I think Higher Ed in the U.S. is essentially the wild west. Colleges have so much independence (including independence to mislead marketing) objective info sources are really needed! Maybe not ranking, but at least metrics.
@1a @GerkenHeather @LSongRichardson @ericgertler @AngelBPerez @melissakorn Listening now as I work in higher ed. Curious to hear data re: how many students actually pay attention to rankings when choosing a university or college.
