The Mechanic Arts School at Winchester Square laid the ground work to Trade High School on Elliot Street in 1905. Although the specialty was handwork, a complete college prep program included four years of Latin. The rigorous school day ran from 8:15 to 3:45.

George Washington visited us twice. He stayed at Parsons Tavern at the southeast corner of Court Square. Tradition says he drank his flip beneath the nearby elm, hence our Washington Elm. Can you tell us about Longmeadow’s Washington Elm, ⁦@LongmeadowH⁩?

The Forest Park neighborhood boomed with the development of the park itself in the 1880s. Successful businessmen and professionals moved into fashionable homes on Sumner Avenue and its side streets. Residents included brewer Theodor Geisel, grandfather of Dr. Seuss.

Our early 20th century theaters offered large seating capacity for both matinee and evening shows. Poli’s Palace featured enough seats for 3000!

Businessman Sylvester Z. Poli opened theaters in states throughout the east coast. He came to our town in 1904 and set up the vaudeville showcase on Worthington Street. A fire destroyed the facility but he re-built and created what was billed as New England’s finest playhouse.”

Dwight O. Gilmore built the Court Square Theater for a grand opening of “legitimate theater” in 1892. Note the theaters’s entrance on the far left. The upper floors of the building housed the Court Square Hotel with shops on the ground level.

The Paramount opened in 1929 at the end of the Roaring Twenties. Elegantly dressed theater-goers arrived in fancy automobiles amid flashing cameras and bright lights to visit the million dollar facility. The theater inspired a song writer to produce the song “Springfield.”
