I was told not to tweet this until the houses adjourned for fear of jinxing it, but the Minnesota legislature just completed what is probably the most productive session anywhere in the country since probably the New Deal. Sweeping bills and reforms across every area of life.
We are seeing the results of disinvestment in rural areas across the state. Multiple crises in nursing homes, child care, schools, and affordable housing. All while the wealthy have even more. Invest in us. #mnleg startribune.com/spend-every-pe…
@jasonhickel Amid the hyperventilating by our right-wing media, politicos, and constituency I thought, “this balloon could be a moment of profound empathy by citizens of a nation that for two decades violated countries sovereignty with armed drones.” But then I thought, “nah, probably not.”
"Fully funding schools" isn't a terribly helpful talking point b/c MN doesn't fund schools - it funds *students*. The single-largest & most critical investment the #mnleg could make in MN's students in the next budget would be fully funding Special Ed & English Learner mandates.
The call to “fully fund” public schools is a popular tlkg pt. But it’s too abstract to be useful as an organizing tool & it obscures the fact that we don’t fund schools, we fund *students*. Let’s breakdown what it could mean to “fully fund” MN’s kids. A thread!

"Tests are racist/The End" is the attitude of many & serves to uphold a status quo leaving BIPOC kids behind. Tests are rooted in white supremacy culture AND they tell us a lot about the development of specific skills critical to later learning & life in general.

The guaranteed income (GI) results from Stockton are in: 1. Employment & Productivity ⬆️ 2. Well Being ⬆️ and stress ⬇️ 3. It allowed people to pay off debt 4. The money was spent on necessities and not drugs. We need a guaranteed income policy. @stocktondemo @mayorsforagi
4) Avoid the false dichotomy of SEL or academic needs. They are connected & its about time we stop placing them in silos. Kids need both all the time. Sound academic instruction includes SEL.
As we hopefully prepare to come out of the pandemic here's what I need: 1) Spare me disingenuous claims of supporting the wholistic needs of our children until you start voting to support them both in & out of school. Just be honest - You need schools to fully open the economy.
