The NME and Melody Maker were increasingly reporting on how Kurt’s health was deteriorating. He made no secret of it in his interviews. Everett True, the Melody Maker journalist, was shocked at the way Kurt, his wife Courtney Love and their young daughter Frances were living.

Nirvana were booked to play the SECC in Glasgow with Sebadoh and The Raincoats. I’d queued up for almost 3-hours for tickets at Virgin Records on Union Street.

June-Anne was full of news, they’d turned down a support slot with Huggy Bear as they just didn’t feel it was right. James, the guy who had recorded and produced their album, had sent it to a few labels and one, Heavenly Recordings, were considering putting out a 7-inch.

The Velvet Underground were on the cover of the NME. I took it as a sign after The Gift playing one of their songs at The Clydesdale. The Waterboys were on the front of the Melody Maker. It wasn’t a great issue. I thought they sounded a bit up themselves.

If we could record and release an album I’d be happy. But just to hear our song travelling through the airwaves into people's bedrooms … I’m happy with that. There is no money involved. It feels magical. I’ve listened to Peel for years and there is something special about radio.

Grant made me a mixtape which featured Daniel Johnston and some obscure John and Yoko songs. ‘Just wait until you hear Young Marble Giants.' I didn’t know if this was a tease or a threat, but I loved his passion and thirst for discovering new and different sounds.

I was listening to loads of music and dreaming of being in a band or writing for the NME. I didn’t have anything lined up. Others talked of conditional or unconditional offers for University. I was just enjoying falling unconditionally in love with loads of music.
