Hi Elon
I love what you're doing. I am 82 year old xUSAF fighter pilot and I was a pilot from 1968 to1972. I was stationed at the airbase in Bitburg Germany. Every weekend the 36th Tac Fighter Wing would send a 4 ship of F4 Phantom fighter planes from the 22nd, 23rd or 53rd Tac Fighter squadron on cross-country trips to USAF bases in Europe. 4 planes and 8 crewman. We would take off with 2 370 gallon wing tanks and a 600 gallon centerline tank each from Bitburg Germany to go to Tarajon AFB in Spain or Lakenheath in England or Aviono AFB in Italy on Friday. On Saturday we would take off for one of the other bases. On Sunday we would fly back to Bitburg. We would fly 4 F4s approximately 10 hours on each of these12 weekend trips. I beleave we would burn in the neighborhood of 3800 gallons of fuel for each of these 48 F4s trips (182,400 total gallons a year) for these trips. When I asked why we had to take these flights I was told we needed to burn up gas (4 F4s and 8 guys away from their families every weekend) so we could ask for that much more gas in addition to the gas we used for regular training each year to make sure we would get that much fuel the next year. I believe this was a common practice throughout the all the squadrons in the airforce

I got the math all wrong. We flew 24 F4s and used a total of 94,930 gallons of gas every weekend. 370,000 gallons a month, 11 months a year (each squadron went TDY for 1 month to Spain) and used 1,044,230 gallons of gas a year.
