Every April 15th, Oromo patriotics commemorate Oromo Martyrs’ Day, Guyyaa Gootota Oromoo. It is a day to remember and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the rights and freedom of the Oromo people. The date marks the anniversary of the execution of prominent eleven Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) leaders in Shinnigaa, Somalia. A group of high-ranking military delegateswas traveling to Somalia for a meeting with political leaders when they were abducted by bandits in the Shinniga desert. The captors, former members of Siad Barre’s army, had a deep-seated animosity towards the Oromo people and OLF. When the delegates were ordered to separate by religion before execution, they chose unity over division, refusing to identify as anything other than Oromo. On April 15, 1980, all of them were executed and buried together in a mass grave. Here is the name of the Oath of Shinnigaa (Irbuu Shinniigaa) OLF high ranking officials that executed April 15th, 1980. 1. Jaal Magarsaa Barii (Bariisoo Waabee) 2.
