Billionaire Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta Resources is lining up a $5.2 billion refinancing after recent credit rating upgrades, as the UK based parent prepares to split its India listed unit into five separate businesses. The group has hired eight banks including Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan to arrange the deal, which would replace $3.6 billion of US dollar bonds maturing between 2028 and 2033 and $1.6 billion of loans due from 2028 onward. People familiar said Vedanta is targeting a reduction of as much as 300 basis points in funding costs, taking average borrowing costs down from about 10 percent, and is considering amortizing bonds with five, seven and 10 year maturities to smooth repayments. The refinancing comes as net debt has fallen to $4.9 billion as of March 31 from $8.9 billion five years earlier, and both S&P and Moody’s upgraded the company last month. The mega loan push is tied directly to Agarwal’s plan to demerge Vedanta Ltd into five focused verticals covering metals, oil and gas, power, steel and electronics. He has said the breakup will make each business more nimble and able to raise capital independently, with no plans to sell stakes in the demerged entities at the parent level. Agarwal has also laid out about $20 billion of combined expansion spending for the Indian businesses, and is pursuing growth in critical minerals and transition metals, including a $2 billion copper processing push in Saudi Arabia. Recent fundraising includes a $350 million loan from First Abu Dhabi Bank, Mashreq, Standard Chartered, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan, with Twin Star Holdings as guarantor, to cover near term maturities and interest costs. Vedanta aims to bring its debt to EBITDA ratio down to 1 from 1.4 while keeping dividend payouts high, as it tries to reset the balance sheet ahead of the split. - World Business News.
