@AdrianKenraf True. I actually cannot remember the last time I saw a twist in written form. All my thoughts go to movies or TV... The closest thing I can think of in book form is "betrayal of expectations", like in Harry Potter when both Harry and competitor grabbed the prize and transported.
@AdrianKenraf No. The whole point of plot twists is that you put in the foreshadowing and the Chekhov's guns etc, in the right places to make the twist simultaneously unexpected and yet obvious when it happens. It's an art.
@AdrianKenraf One that you do not see coming but when you think back you see that all the clues were hidden in plain sight. If you want to learn how to create perfect plot twists then read Agatha Christie.
@AdrianKenraf Fair enough. Chuck Palahniuk did it very well in "Fight Club" then. I'm not really sure how, but rules in writing are meant to be broken... Until it becomes a cliché anyway. 😁
@AdrianKenraf As a writer I’d love to pretend it’s in my control, but it’s up to readers to judge For myself it’s the reveal of & answers to hidden questions forcing a perspective shift I think my last chapter in Sybil does this revealing a meta narrative…I got chills every round of edits
@AdrianKenraf Well without spoiling too much, The MC is dealing with a powerful being that has magic related to the moon, sleep, and most importantly DREAMS. But the way it ended didn't feel like a poor writing backpedal move. Trust me, it working was a surprise to me as well.
@AdrianKenraf You make a pretty good point, and yeah I've seen a few examples of that happening. I guess the trick is to be a bit inconspicuous about the "nothing makes sense" bit, like little odd details that suddenly pop at the end that otherwise just look like background junk.
@AdrianKenraf Yes. Also, I feel it is the moral duty of the writer to make the seeds available. Not a fan of the sucker-punch plot twist that has no set-up.
@AdrianKenraf its something that makes you realize that it was there but you never thought about it. Details, character's actions, even something you don't realize is important until after the bomb goes off and you realize you've been had
@AdrianKenraf You need to lay the groundwork for a twist. It only works if the reader doesn't see the hints until the twist is revealed. But you need to do this without explaining afterwards.

@AdrianKenraf Foreshadowing is good, but not too much guesswork. It should be an aha moment, not a wth moment. You shouldn’t have to explain too much, it should just come together and be understood.

@AdrianKenraf It’s not a good twist if you just have something come out of nowhere. Clues must be seeded throughout. They don’t have to be obvious or in your face, but you need to include them. It shouldn’t need to be explained, it should make sense once the twist is revealed.
@AdrianKenraf never explain it. the best twists are truly eye openers that reference back to something in the first couple of chapters.
@AdrianKenraf So there's a fanfic called "PREY" that ended with the 'it was just a dream' twist. But the author actually made it work instead of it being a huge let-down.
