@JodieSmitten @KieranRose7 @AusomeIreland @TanyaAdkin @milton_damian @helenfarah79 @aucademy @TheNurturePro @KatieAdolphus Not a fan - have just written about this in a book, can do an awful lot of harm suppressing natural authentic autistic children in my view.
Unpopular opinion time: Being able to make an ADHD or autism spectrum diagnosis should be a core adult psychiatry competency, and it’s not going to work if they all have to be seen in a specialist clinic to get that diagnosis…

Call for abstracts for Neurodiversity in Higher Education 2 #NDinHE2 is now open! If you'd like to submit an abstract for a talk, poster or creative workshop, please complete this form by 31st May: shorturl.at/dqsyO
And - exciting news - please #savethedate for Neurodiversity in Higher Education 2 #NDinHE2 which we'll be hosting at York St John on Friday 13th September! This follows a brilliant event last year at Bristol University smhas.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/neurodiversity… Call for abstracts coming soon!!
So we either discuss just autism & use correct terminology or embrace all ND and wince repeatedly. I’m not wincing every time anymore. I just hope I don’t fall into misusing the terms myself!
In my view the most important message re language is the switch from PFL to IFL re autism. So it should be autistic person not person with autism. That concept doesn’t translate as easily to other neurodevelopmental conditions so the confusion is understandable.
Those new to the area want to be allies but get confused when criticised by ND advocates for using terminology they’ve learned from other ND advocates, which is unfair.
It’s frustrating. In medicine / healthcare misuse is relentless. The main challenge is the ADHD ND community promote what we as autistics see as (& know is) wrong terminology. Yet #NeurodiversityInMedicine is such a hot topic right now I think we might need to just embrace it
I think it’s fine for allies to use either, without being criticised. There isn’t even consensus & clear understanding within the community. Once people get the concept of “neurodivergent” it’s hard to go back to “neurodiverse” for an individual. ND is a fairly safe abbreviation
My concern is that while we know the correct terminology, confusion is rife, often fuelled by other ND advocates with differing views. The last thing we want is allies keeping silent for fear of getting it wrong, so I’ve become much more tolerant of misuse.
But variations on “neurodiverse person” or worse “person with neurodiversity” have become so common that I wonder if we’ve lost the language battle and if continuing to oppose the use of incorrect language is counterproductive.
Neurodiverse describes a population, not an individual Neurodivergent describes an individual who falls outside the neurotypical majority Neurodivergent is a neutral descriptive term. It’s not a bad word, does not imply abnormality or deviance.
And just to be clear, I mean that in terms of specific conditions, not whether or not someone has a formal diagnosis. I was just as autistic before I got an official label as after, and so many of us have difficulty accessing diagnostic services.
Best to appreciate the value in recognising that #neurodiversity is a biological fact, realise that it includes everyone, accept the common ND conditions which are usually referred to when it’s discussed and avoid attempts to define its limits.
Stretched to its limits, the argument to include all variations in brain or indeed human functioning would include every medical or psychological condition, which is clearly not what is intended by the concept.
@Ka81 I wrote a thread about this x.com/autisticdoctor…
