Gradually building up a range of contemporary aircraft for the 1920 period of the first Croydon Airport on Plough Lane. Three are lined up in front of the enclosure with different lighting applied. Bristol Type 47 Tourer De Havilland DH4A Vickers Vimy Commercial #twinmotion
The question isn't if you'd pay for a ride on a Vickers Vimy Commercial airplane carousel—of course you would! The question is how much would you be willing to pay for such a ride.
@MassiasThanos @CroydonAirport Oh I don't know - lets go for broke !
This video shows the size of two of the early airlines - Daimler Airway and Instone Air Line. Noticeable are the large number of Airco/de Havilland aircraft (DH.18, DH.34, DH.4a). Both airlines were amalgamated into Imperial Airways in 1924 #dehavilland #instone #imperialairways
Handley Page W.8f G-EBIX in Imperial Airways blue scheme. The white square background to the wing and rudder registrations were retained. #handleypage #imperialairways #croydonairport
Handley Page W.8f G-EBIX Some views of the W.8f Hamilton G-EBIX alongside the W.9 Hampstead G-EBLE. The W series reverted to a twin engined format with the Napier Lion powered W.10 The W.8f had two Siddeley Pumas and a nose mounted RR Eagle. #handleypage #croydonairport
👀
The Finnish Air Force’s agile combat employment concept includes the use of highway strips also in winter conditions. During exercise #Hanki24, the F/A-18 Hornets operating from Tikkakoski Air Base take off from a strip of Highway 4 adjacent to the base. #ilmavoimat
Just a reminder that there is quite an extensive set of videos of Croydon Airport and its aircraft on the Archive Sketcher YouTube channel. Most are in 4K youtube.com/channel/UClMuJ…
An engine-centric view of the W.8f.. The W.8f was similar to the W.8e used by SABENA - a 360hp Rolls-Royce Eagle IX in the nose and two 240hp Siddeley Pumas In 1929 G-EBIX was upgraded to W.8g with a W.10 tail, the Pumas replaced with Eagle FXIIs and the nose engine removed.
Some views of the Bristol Type 75 Ten Seater G-EBEV used by Instone and transferred to Imperial. Other aircraft are the Bristol Type 62 Ten Seater G-EAWY of Handley Page Transport, and also a W.8b G-EBBI 'Prince Henry' also in HPT colours.
A very illuminating thread (for those with an interest in engineering at least).
I'm assembling Imperial Airways aircraft inherited from Instone, Daimler and Handley Page Transport. The last is G-EBIX, a Handley Page W.8f/g I believe in 1924 G-EBIX was the W.8f version - W.8b tail, 2 x Pumas and 1 x Eagle Using a mix of W.8b and W.9 (G-EBLE) models as a base
Saunders-Roe is a name that few today have heard of, but in the early 1950s they were seldom out of the news. In this image we see the prototype Princess at anchor, the second (never completed) Princess on the slipway, being kept company with SR1A, jet flying boat fighter!
Bristol Ten Seater Type 75 G-EBOV One of the interesting features of this aircraft was its approach to maintenance. The nose pod containing the Bristol Jupiter engine was hinged and could be swung out for inspection.
