And now we have three oil markets: Asia (Oman oil at $167), Brent ($113) and US (WTI $97)
The oil market has fragmented: Oil is now trading for $150/bbl in Asia (except the occasional sanctioned Iranian tanker) where demand destruction has started. China and India most pressured. Meanwhile it is still $100 in the US
🛢️There's a lot being said about oil prices right now, so I put this chart together to help explain the major crude benchmarks and why they're all behaving differently. ⚪Brent (white) — The world's "default" oil price. Most global trade is priced off this. When the news says "oil is at $108," they mean Brent. 🟡WTI (yellow) — The U.S. benchmark, based on crude delivered to Oklahoma. It's the lowest line on the chart because American oil doesn't need to transit the Strait of Hormuz. 🟢Murban (green) — Crude from Abu Dhabi, delivered at Fujairah port, which sits just outside the Strait. Even though it technically doesn't have to pass through the chokepoint, drone strikes have hit Fujairah and nearby ports, pushing insurance and shipping costs up. 🟣Oman (purple) — The key benchmark for heavier crude sold into Asia. Many refineries in China, Japan, and South Korea are built specifically to process this grade. It's the highest line on the chart because Asian buyers are competing fiercely for a shrinking pool of cargoes. 🔴Dubai (red) — Used to price most long-term Gulf→Asia export contracts. It tracks alongside Oman as a measure of how hard Asian markets are being squeezed. The story isn't any single price — it's the gap between them. In late February these five lines were within $6 of each other. Now the spread between WTI and Oman is over $50. Since the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began Feb 28, the Strait of Hormuz has effectively been closed. Daily transits have fallen from a historical average of ~138 ships to fewer than 5. The IEA has called it the largest disruption to global energy supply in history. Iran's IRGC has warned that not "a litre of oil" will pass for U.S. allies, while selectively allowing some Iranian, Indian, and Pakistani tankers through. Saudi Arabia is rerouting oil to its Red Sea port at Yanbu, and the UAE is using a pipeline to Fujairah — but combined pipeline capacity is only 3.5–5.5 million barrels/day vs the 20 million that normally flows through the Strait. Meanwhile, the 400 million barrel emergency reserve release by IEA members covers roughly 4 days of global consumption. Japan's refiners get ~95% of their crude from the Gulf. China receives 45% of its oil via Hormuz. South Korea, India, Thailand, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are all severely exposed. The wider the spread between the Asian benchmarks and Western ones on this chart, the more you're seeing that pain in real time.

At my last job, they started outsourcing marketing work to India. (This turned out longer than expected; working through my anger). Nothing got done. We had a request/ticketing system where my team uploaded detailed briefs with all required assets. Every submission resulted in the Indians scheduling a kickoff call to ask questions that were clearly covered in the document. These calls took longer than the actual work (we were giving them trivial projects, for reasons that are made obvious below) Every meeting included at least five Indians, several of which had no relation to the project (cameras were always off). Holidays came out of nowhere, rarely announced in advance, and were never accounted for in project schedules; instead they became a way to justify project slip. There was no accountability for project management and schedules. Well, we were held accountable by our bosses, but there could be no criticism of the Indian team. One set of 50 mindless brochure updates took three months because “it wasn’t a fun project” so they would only do a few per day. They averaged less than one per day. These documents were essential to the sales process on a new product line but we just had to wait. Hiring was a mess Indian law requires 2 months notice in most situations to leave a job, so when someone quit, we had to start a search, extend an offer, and wait two months for them to start. And Indians are constantly job hopping, so we were constantly understaffed and retraining them. 30% of the time, our new hire would fail to show up because they’d already found a new job elsewhere. They refused to learn anything. We were constantly asked to conduct business training, brand standards training, provide samples, etc. - any excuse to slow work down or prevent it from starting. There was no self-education, everything had to be delivered live through a Teams meeting. The work was garbage. They had zero design instincts; basic stuff like centering headings and format consistency were incomprehensible. In one case we marked a document “insert logo here” and they added the phrase “insert logo here” to the document. The Indians were faking their credentials. They lacked the graphic design skills of a first-semester community college student. We’d go through 8-10 revisions on every project. At one point, I mocked up a logo in PowerPoint since they weren’t getting it, and they simply traced it in Indesign and delivered that as final work. Indians would schedule calls to pitch projects they came up with that had no relation to business objectives while the work we assigned sat incomplete in the queue. The primary objective of the Indian managers was to report any criticism of the team so I could be knocked back in line, and to manufacture worthless “make work” projects to keep the team “productive” - i.e. protecting their staffing for prestige and power. Criticism was squashed After respectfully sharing the issues we were having, two VPs and an HR director (all Indian) came to my office to put me back in line. Our CEO called me out in front of my peers because I wasn’t using them enough. Guess where he’s from? They cost more than US workers The fully-burdened cost for these Indian workers was 50% of a US worker. When you consider that 5+ people were involved in every meeting and the US workers ultimately had to do their jobs anyway (because they never got anything done at acceptable quality), we were paying at least 2-3x per head. However, the perception in the C-Suite (which included several Indians) is that each Indian worker was a 50% cost reduction, and it was pitched to Wall Street that way. So the constant pressure was on to fill jobs in India. This company was full-time in office for culture and collaboration, but didn’t care that the Indians were all on a 12 hour offset and we’d never meet each other in real life. They’re siphoning American wealth into “make-work” jobs that cripple companies’ productivity.

My Ustadh told me something one evening that completely shifted the way I viewed hardship. We were talking about setbacks - missed opportunities, closed doors, things that just didn't go our way. Someone had just shared how they didn't get into a job they're really passionate about. You could see the weight in their voice. Disappointment laced every word. That's when Ustadh said: "You know the story of Musa and Khidr?" We all nodded. He said: "Everyone loves the part where Khidr explains why he broke the boat, killed the boy, and rebuilt the wall. Because suddenly, the pain makes sense. The confusion becomes clarity. But do you realise something?" He paused. "Musa only got the explanation because it was a lesson. The people who owned the boat, the parents of that child, the town that rejected them-they never got told. They just had to live with what happened." The room was quiet. Then he said: "Sometimes in life, you don't get the Khidr moment. You don't get to find out why something happened. You just get the qadr. The closed door. The loss. The silence. And your test is whether you can still trust Allah without needing the explanation." He leaned forward and said: "It's easy to have sabr when the story wraps up neatly. But the real test is: Can you have tawakkul when you're still in the middle of the story?" I remember sitting with those words long after the class ended. Because we all wait for our Khidr moment, the point where everything makes sense. But sometimes, that moment doesn't come in this life. And still, we are asked to trust.
