It was great to be on This Morning this morning. This country would grind to a halt without unpaid family carers.
@Alison_McGovern @labourpress It’s time we paid family carers the same going rate for the job that a carer in a local authority care home would get paid.
@Alison_McGovern And people who claim carers allowance have this allowance stopped when reaching pension age yet caring for loved ones never stops.
@Alison_McGovern Maybe we should just pay them the full time wage that would be paid to a working carer... and lower the pressure on the care sector
@Alison_McGovern It’s great to hear someone from labour speaking up for us unpaid carers.
@Alison_McGovern Working carers who aren't entitled to carers allowance are doing two jobs, one is unpaid & saving the government huge amounts of money & the other pays taxes towards the social care we struggle to get which causes us to be exhausted unpaid carers in the first place. #Scandalous
@Alison_McGovern @wesstreeting and if you’re retired ( often sooner than you’d like because of needing to care) you get nothing or next to nothing.
@Alison_McGovern Carers are key to the impending social care crisis. Make caring a viable choice and the system can become functional. Let a claim be spread across two people so they can do 17.5hrs, earn more and keep a career; let it qualify for free eye tests and prescriptions, have a carers
@Alison_McGovern @juliamacfarlane Do something about the childcare rort. Government subsidies give cash straight to the owners. Surely it’s not a hard business model for government to actually run childcare centres.
@Alison_McGovern Well said. She's my MP
@Alison_McGovern Really hope you mean this and it isn't something that is to be trotted out in an election year because we have been in this position for decades - have a gander at Sir William Hamling's debate 13th March 1967 - hey & here we are - Still! #UnpaidCarers
