The U.S. broke its promise to #Russia not to expand NATO to the east! Secretary of Defense Robert Gates “described the rapid inclusion of the East European states into the NATO as a grave mistake and the attempt of the West to include Ukraine into the #NATO as grave provocation!”
@RepPress NOPE. Gysi lies. There was no such promise in 1990. There is a NATO -Russia contract from 1997.
@AlterweiserMan7 “We agreed,” Genscher said, “that the intention does not exist to extend the #NATO defense area toward the East. That applies, moreover, not just to the territory of the GDR, which we do not want to incorporate, but rather applies in general.” sites.google.com/view/genschers… #Russia
@RepPress Gorbachev has repeatedly said in interviews that there were no such promises. In 1997 the Russia NATO Treaty was signed. This forms the legal basis for the eastward expansion. In 2002, Putin gave up his right of veto
@AlterweiserMan7 "repeatedly?" In 2014 he gave an interview but those who latch on to that alleged 'smoking gun' ignore that he said, “was definitely a violation of the spirit of the statements and assurances made to us in 1990,” in that same reply of that interview. Read U.S. State Dept. report:
