Dear Africans, You may be wondering why some Zimbabweans like me are celebrating the death of @wicknellchivayo. This man was a ZANU-PF member. A political party that has oppressed us for more than 40 years. He made most of his money from inflated government tenders. Some he got and never delivered. He was used to weaken our youths, our celebrities, our churches, and our church leaders. He gave them money, cars, and gifts so they would stop fighting oppression, corruption, and injustice, and start seeing ZANU-PF as a good party. We are happy he is gone. That is one problem less. We wish God would take all the people still oppressing us. Celebrate with us.

31 July 2026 was a huge success in the hearts and minds of the majority of the people. Its purpose was to send the following message to the regime PEACEFULLY:NO TO THE 2030/CAB3/CAA3 agenda. The reaction of the regime told it all: they got the message, they do not like the message, they are prepared to assault, torture, imprison and kill in a bid to suppress the message and they will abuse/misuse State resources to fund oppression. We are not deterred. We remain determined. Now 31 July was an initiative of others which we supported. We are now organising our own peaceful actions to continue with the same message: NO TO THE 2030/CAB3/CAA3 agenda. I have to remind all that we have two strategies: legal battles in the courts and peaceful political action. The courts will hear us soon. Peaceful political actions are continuing. CAA3 will be reversed. We will win.

This man is Bhekimpilo Mbedzi, who is currently in prison in Zimbabwe for nothing more than expressing his intention to protest against a new constitutional amendment that extends President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office and removes Zimbabweans’ right to directly elect their President. He did not commit an act of violence. He simply exercised his right to speak out and insisted that the Constitution be followed. The law he opposed was not subjected to a referendum, despite fundamentally altering Zimbabwe’s constitutional order. For that, he was arrested, detained and denied bail. Today, he appeared in court wearing leg irons that have visibly swollen his ankles. Shackling a peaceful political activist in this manner is not the conduct of a government confident in its own legitimacy. It is the conduct of a government that fears dissent and seeks to intimidate those who demand constitutionalism and accountability. This is one of the reasons why so many young Zimbabweans have lost faith in the current political establishment. When peaceful disagreement is criminalised and citizens are imprisoned simply for insisting that the State obey its own Constitution, hope in democratic institutions inevitably erodes. President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s final legacy should have been one of national unity, constitutionalism and reconciliation. Instead, images such as these tell a very different story. Repression has never extinguished resistance to illegality; it has only strengthened it, drawing greater attention to the very issues the authorities seek to silence. Bhekimpilo Mbedzi is not an enemy of Zimbabwe. He is a citizen asking his government to abide by its own Constitution. He has not advocated violence or taken up arms against the State. He should be released immediately and allowed to exercise the constitutional rights guaranteed to every Zimbabwean. Bhekimpilo Mbedzi who is the Matabeleland South provincial chairperson of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), is not a criminal. He should not be in leg irons, and he should not be in prison simply for peacefully expressing his intention to protest and insisting that the State abides by its own Constitution. In any society that respects the rule of law, such conduct is protected, not punished.

You know, there are times when I struggle to understand the psyche of people in ZANUPF and the Zimbabwean regime. At a time when the government is already weathering storms over issues such as Constitutional Amendment No. 3 and many other related controversies, somebody in ZANUPF seems to have a job description whose main qualification is to do extraordinarily foolish things. Today, they loaded a truck full of riot police and stationed it outside the offices of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), one of the smallest political parties in Zimbabwe. This level of intolerance is astonishing. If the state feels threatened by one of the country’s smallest political parties, then something is fundamentally wrong. It makes you wonder where this country is heading. Sometimes you engage people within ZANUPF and think that perhaps there is progress, that perhaps there is an emerging understanding of the need for tolerance and democratic engagement. Then, within days, the party does something else; people are beaten up, citizens are prevented from exercising their rights, clergy are stopped from carrying out their duties, and now this. It is deeply embarrassing. Even many ZANUPF supporters are embarrassed by these kinds of actions. I do not understand why someone in ZANUPF does not tell the President that you do not win hearts and minds through intimidation, pettiness and heavy-handed tactics. You do not build legitimacy by doing foolish things that bring not only your political party but the entire country into disrepute. Why would anyone in their right mind make the security assessment that Lovemore Madhuku or the NCA constitutes such a threat that Zimbabwe must be embarrassed by the deployment of riot police outside its offices? It beggars belief and says far more about the insecurities of those in power than it does about the strength of the opposition.

Today the regime, deployed over 50 police officers at the NCA Head Office to block the holding of a leadership meeting, but it FAILED in its tracks. The NCA meeting proceeded at a venue unknown to the oppressors. We recommitted ourselves to stopping the CAA3 agenda. We will win.
