In the current chaos in Lebanon, this is probably one of the most important documentaries to watch. The Soil and the Sea (watch it free on aflamuna, and there are subtitles), sheds light on over 100 untouched mass graves from Lebanon's Civil War, hidden beneath everyday locations like gardens and cafes. Despite more than 30 years passing since the war's end, families still await closure regarding missing relatives. The establishment of a National Commission for the Disappeared in 2020 brings hope for investigations into these sites, preserving them from neglect and development. While much of the current rhetoric in Lebanon has become hostile, it's important to remember that for many, the war has not ended.

The documentary opens up with a gorgeous original poem by Elias Khoury. Fitting, because as I watched this, I am reminded of his book White Masks. It is very easy to talk about politics and war and forget the human tragedy of it - the psychological impact of war on people.
@Amarmustafa_ Thank you very much @Amarmustafa_ hopefully we’ll soon be able to bring the film to cinemas in Australia too
