FYI. Abu Hamad al-Ghazali was also takfired and his books banned by some. The fact of being "takfired" often does little to curtail one's influence.
Honestly speaking, the schools closest to the Mutazilites are the Zaydis and the Samarqandi Maturidis. Zaydis and Mutazilites generally hold the same line of argumentation. The Samarqandi Maturidis disagree with Mutazilites on very few issues.
As the Commentator points out in the Kashf, the issue with these pious folk is that they tend to mix up a condition for knowledge with the source of it. Spiritual purity, like good bodily health, is at best a material aid to doing nazar well.
