Pause's iPhone onboarding lagged going into the Permissions screen. I'd spent a full day on that onboarding's performance already. Still lagged. So I measured just that one hop. Tap: 1–2 ms. Slide: 280 ms, on time. Incoming screen: drew nothing for 268, 441 and 522 ms across three cold runs. Slide lands on an empty cream rectangle, then the whole screen hard-cuts in. Half a second of nothing, then everything. That's the "lag". The screen refuses to draw until it knows both permission rows. Both checks are cold on that hop. Screen Time authorisation status is a sync call on the main thread: 22 ms in the sim, 20–290 ms warm on a phone, 3.7 s if the daemon hasn't been touched yet. Notification settings: async, 12–244 ms first time. Plus the idle Kapi clip opening for the first time on the same frame, 454 ms. Ruled out by measuring: the transition (29 ms empty), the card compositing (noise), delaying the reads until after the slide (worse by half a second). Fix: draw the field, Kapi and headline immediately, hide only the two rows until status lands. Start both reads and open the clip while the Story is still on screen. Skip compositing on undimmed rows. Stop a fully-granted reinstall from auto-advancing mid-slide. I built that screen to wait for everything before showing anything. Never occurred to me the wait was the thing people would feel.
