This real-time brain mapping lets surgeons remove as much of the tumor as is safely possible while protecting the abilities that make a person who they are, like speaking and moving. Once the tumor is out, the bone is secured back in place and the incision is closed. Imagine being asked to count out loud while a surgeon works on your brain 😯 It's called an awake craniotomy, and it's used when a tumor sits near areas that control speech, movement or vision. The patient is first sedated and the scalp and skull coverings are numbed, since the brain itself has no pain receptors. After the skull is opened, the patient is gently brought to a wakeful state. Then the surgeon applies small electrical stimulation to specific spots while the patient talks, counts, names objects or moves a limb. If speech stops or a hand freezes, the surgeon knows that area is critical and works around it.
