Here’s a dirty little secret. In Canadian law schools, cold calling is not a thing. The prof asks questions and people put up their hands to answer. (Often it’s the same people over and over, which gets annoying.) And yet we somehow come out prepared for practice.
@AndrewBernstei9 I was cold called in law school often. It varied from class to class with some professors using the Socratic method and others seeking volunteers.
@AndrewBernstei9 Attended UBC law school (1987-1990). Cold calling started the 2nd day of classes. I remember it distinctly bc I still didn’t have all my student loan money and wasn’t able to buy all my materials right away. Was called on to summarize the case THE 2ND DAY!!
@AndrewBernstei9 Are you sure about the last sentence?
@AndrewBernstei9 Surprised to hear this from a fellow U of T graduate. A number of my 1L classes (contracts, civil procedure come to mind) had cold calling every class throughout the semester as a regular feature of the law school induction experience.
