The Poinsettia season is off and running. Early response is looking good, but we need more feedback. Current recommendations are for the low rate of 1 Delphastus per square meter, spread over 3 introductions, 2 weeks apart. Starting now. And, don’t forget the fallacis!

Now that Poinsettia time is rolling, please don’t forget to prevent the Lewis mite. Last year a few were badly surprised! Prevention is a single application of fallacis, at just 2 mites per square meter. Best done in propagation. Prevention is what BioControl is all about.

Sorry for the long absence. Keep a close eye on efficacy as the average temperature drops. Stored Encarsia can’t keep up with Greenhouse whitefly below 18.6C😱. Nonstored Encarsia is good down to 10 C and Delphastus is good down to 10 C also

Anystis has united the world. Researchers from numerous States and Nations are now sequencing collected samples, and using electron microscopy to identify their keys. It turns out that they actually do have eyes at the back of their “head”. Thanks Cheryl!

We lost a champion of Biological Control on the weekend. John, owner of Evergreen Growers in Oregon passed away with his wife Olli, children and grandchildren at his side. John embraced BioControl and through his association with the OAN and later, the ANBP strongly advocated.

A new technique we are playing with is considering pests, as a symptom. This is not only effective but it also ends up saving a lot of bios, and money, as it treats the “disease” rather than the symptoms. Spider mites are a symptom of plant stress. Aphids related to soft growth.

The “nuclear winter” that we saw in Cascadia did more than drive the thrips and the aphids indoors rapidly, it has caused significant mold/mildew activity in many different crops and situations. Beware!

We are rethinking the timing of fallacis on hops. The new target timing is at the training stage, when the strings are tied. In the Willamette valley, May 1. This is 3 weeks earlier than our original timing. Still 10,000 per acre.

We need to consider the value of “dusk” with respect to Beneficial Insects. Abruptly turning on and off the lights in a non-naturally lit area is not conducive to normal predatory behaviour
