My takeaway: authentication isn’t just a box to tick. It’s part of building reliable, secure workflows.
Next, I’ll explore how AI nodes fit into n8n workflows.

Your workflow can send the perfect API request and still get rejected.
Why? You may not have the right authentication.
As I explore HTTP Requests in n8n, one thing is clear: knowing where to send a request isn’t enough. You also need to know how access is granted.
Before configuring authentication, ask:
Does this endpoint require authentication?
Which method does the API support?
Where should credentials be sent?
What permissions does the credential need?
The API documentation is your guide.
Here’s an important practice:
Avoid hardcoding sensitive API keys and tokens directly into workflow fields.
Use n8n’s credential features where appropriate, and give credentials only the access they need.
Secure automation starts with secure connections.
A few common methods to recognise:
• Basic Auth: username and password
• Bearer Auth: a token sent with the request
• Header Auth: credentials supplied through a header
• OAuth2: delegated access using an authorization framework
Always follow the API’s requirements.
Option 3: Generic Credential Type
This gives you more flexibility when configuring authentication for an API.
Depending on the service, options can include Basic Auth, Bearer Auth, Header Auth, OAuth1, OAuth2, Digest Auth, and others.
Option 2: Predefined Credential Type
This lets you use a credential type already supported by n8n.
Instead of configuring every authentication detail yourself, you can select the relevant credential type and connect using the supported setup.
Option 1: None
Choose this when the endpoint doesn’t require authentication.
It doesn’t mean n8n will automatically provide credentials. If the API requires a token or key, your request may be rejected without it.
In n8n’s HTTP Request node, you’ll encounter different authentication options.
The right choice depends on what the API supports.
Never assume every service uses the same method. Check its API documentation first.
First, let’s separate two terms:
Authentication: Who are you?
Authorization: What are you allowed to access or do?
They work together, but they aren’t the same thing.
And before sending that first request, there’s another important piece to understand:
Authentication.
Who are you?
What credentials are you sending?
And what are you actually allowed to access?
That’s the next part of this n8n journey.

One thing that stood out to me in n8n: you don’t need a native node for every service you want to connect to.
That’s where the HTTP Request node becomes useful.
My biggest takeaway:
Don’t think of HTTP Request as “the scraping node.”
Think of it as a general-purpose way for n8n to communicate with APIs and web services.
The documentation tells you how that conversation needs to happen.
HTTP Request can also be useful when working with services that don’t have a dedicated n8n integration.
Instead of waiting for a native node, you can work with the service’s API directly—provided the API allows the operation.
One useful feature: n8n can work with API responses as workflow data.
That means the response can become input for the next node.
API → response → transform → filter → CRM → notification.
Now the API call becomes part of a larger business process.
And this is where things get interesting.
Not every API accepts requests the same way.
Some require headers.
Some require query parameters.
Some require a request body.
Some require authentication.
So reading the API documentation matters.
An API endpoint is basically the specific URL where your request is sent.
Think of it as the destination.
Your HTTP Request node needs to know:
Where am I sending this request?
What am I sending?
How should I authenticate?
For example, a GET request might ask:
“Give me the customer details.”
A POST request might say:
“Create this new customer.”
The request method is only one part of the conversation. The endpoint and data matter too.
HTTP requests use different methods depending on what you want to do.
Common ones include:
GET → retrieve data
POST → create/send data
PUT/PATCH → update data
DELETE → remove data
The method tells the API what kind of operation you’re requesting.
