Here are examples of real questions that SDR candidates have been asked during first round convos with top tech startups. IMO the first one is the most important one to nail. "Why sales?" "What metrics were you measured on in past jobs, and how did you do?" "Why a startup, why early stage, why now?" "Why us?" Be ready for "why?" over and over. Some interviewers keep asking until they hit your real motivation. "How do you approach sourcing?" "What outbound have you actually done?" "Tell me about a time you improved a process." "You sent an email to 150 prospects and mixed up every name. What do you do?" "What's your biggest flaw?" "If you were CEO, what would you do?" And if you ask them a question, expect it to get turned back on you (what would YOU do?). The candidates who land offers don't have perfect answers...but they do have GENUINE answers.

Had dinner with a rep last night who just got promoted to AE. I asked if he still does any sourcing. He replied “I’m not required to, but I still dial every morning 9:30-10:30 AM.” He said it makes him a better seller and he doesn’t want to get comfortable relying on inbounds/SDRs for his pipeline. Pretty epic tbh.

I'm reading @WalterIsaacson's bio on Ben Franklin right now. In the first 20 pages he references a historian who believes Franklin's dad didn't let him go to Harvard because he was nervous it would "strip him of his spontaneity, intuitive literary style, zest, freshness, and the un-clutteredness of his mind" Isaacson doesn't give a ton of credence to this claim (and in fact says that Franklin's rebellious nature may have been ENHANCED at Harvard, which was dealing with an epidemic of excessive eating, drinking, and partying at the time), but interesting to think about. I think Harvard is great and I'm glad I went there. But I wonder if big corporates are the "zest strippers" of the modern age 👀

posting on X has made me a better entrepreneur. It has re-unlocked a part of my brain that I had forgotten about. X as a platform encourages a lot of posting/engagement. Posting a lot (and having a young account) inherently means that a lot of my posts have flopped. At first the flops bothered me. I felt insecure. Like I wasn't putting out the "right" kind of content. But even two weeks into serious posting, the flops (which are still the majority), don't affect me at all. I brush it off, don't take it personally, and keep posting. And ultimately THIS is what being an entrepreneur is all about. It's not about being perfect every time. It's just about taking action. Most things won't work, but some will and that's all you need.

@kade_hinkle Same here. I have felt myself more intellectually engaged across the board since I started being deliberate about writing posts on X.

LinkedIn still feels like the 🐐for finding candidates, but I think as a social platform its utility pretty much starts and ends there. Nobody is sharing honest takes. It’s all so polished or AI-ified. I was also thinking about it last night and people like Ackman, Andreessen, Senra etc aren’t active on LI but you can actually engage w them here. Speaks volumes i think

What I like about optimizing for trust, reputation, and relationships is that if you do it right, time actually works for you rather than against you. Each of those things slowly compounds until one day you wake up and own the market.

The startup world is obsessed w speed. But funny enough, some of the most valuable things you can build, like trust, reputation, & relationships are incredibly difficult to accelerate.
