Britain hanged Dedan Kimathi in 1957 and buried him where no one could find him. Kimathi led the Mau Mau fighters, who fought British colonial rule in Kenya. He was captured on 21 October 1956, sentenced on 19 November, and hanged at Kamiti prison near Nairobi on 18 February 1957. He was 36. The colonial authorities put his body in an unmarked grave inside the prison. The likely reason was to stop Kenyans from turning it into a shrine. The test of hiding a grave is whether the person gets forgotten. It failed. Kenya has a Kimathi Street in Nairobi, a Kimathi University of Technology and a Kimathi Stadium in Nyeri. A statue of him stands in Nairobi. The grave stayed lost. His widow, Mukami, asked for his remains for decades and died in 2023 without them. In 2019 a foundation said it had identified the site, but gave no details and no exhumation followed. When Nelson Mandela visited Kenya in 1990 and asked to see the grave, nobody could show him.
