@pistashxo A lot of people go around saying that university professors end up becoming lifeless and wooden, but I think that’s somewhat inevitable if they constantly get classes that don’t engage with them or the subject matter.
@pistashxo I think that’s common across the Humanities, right? It was the same for me in Social Communication. It’s very frustrating, because I could see the spark fade from the professors' eyes whenever that happened.
Oliver Wood becomes a time traveler and decides to adopt Harry Potter. Not to save him from the Dursleys, but to turn him into the greatest Seeker in wizarding history.
Years later, Harry meets Draco Malfoy at Madam Malkin’s.
“Play Quidditch at all?” Draco asks.
“Seeker,” Harry replies.
“Same. Know what house you’ll be in? I know I’ll be in Slytherin. Imagine being in Hufflepuff. I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?”
“Yeah, I’d also leave if I got Hufflepuff.”
Draco smirks, until Harry starts explaining his reasoning.
“Hufflepuff has Cedric Diggory, a third-year Seeker. I’d be stuck as his backup until my sixth year. Ravenclaw has Cho Chang coming up, so I’d be waiting until my seventh year there.”
Draco’s smirk slowly disappears.
“Gryffindor or Slytherin would be best. Slytherin’s Seeker is a seventh-year, so he’ll be gone next year. Gryffindor just lost Charlie Weasley, and none of the younger students look promising. If I get to choose, I’m going Gryffindor. I might make the team as a first-year.”
Draco stares at him in disbelief.
“You—You can’t just pick your house based on what their Quidditch team looks like!”
Harry shrugs.
“Why not?”
You mfs cannot stand actual evil characters anymore wtf

This statue is more than 2000 years old.
It’s the Boxer at Rest, an original Greek bronze from the Hellenistic period. He sits slumped on a rock, still wearing his boxing gloves, and turns his head as if someone has just called his name. Every detail of his face tells the story of a life spent fighting: the cauliflower ears, swollen and misshapen from years of blows, the broken nose, the old scars, and the fresh cuts from the match he has just finished.
In ancient Greek boxing, fighters aimed mostly for the head, which is why his face took such a beating...
Now look at his right arm and thigh: those dark spots are drops of blood from his face, made not with paint but with inlaid copper, so they’d shine a little redder than the bronze around them. Even his lips were made of copper.
He was found in Rome in 1885, on the slope of the Quirinal Hill, near the ruins of the ancient Baths of Constantine, where he was probably once on display.
And there’s one small detail that makes him feel even more human: his fingers are worn smooth because in ancient times people walking past couldn’t resist reaching out and touching his hands...
Edward of Woodstock, eldest son of Edward III, was 16 when he commanded the vanguard at Crécy in 1346. Froissart says his division was under such pressure that a knight rode to the king asking for help, and Edward III refused, saying to let the boy win his spurs. He did. Ten years later at Poitiers he beat a French army that outnumbered him and captured the King of France himself.
Nobody called him the Black Prince while he was alive. That name doesn't show up in writing until the 1500s, and nobody is sure where it came from.
What wore him down wasn't a battle. In 1367 he won another victory at Nájera in Spain but came home with a sickness he never shook. By 1370 he was too weak to ride and was carried in a litter to the siege of Limoges, where his men sacked the city. He died in 1376 at 45, a year before his father, and never became king.
His will was oddly specific. He wanted to be buried at Canterbury Cathedral, and he wanted his funeral led by two horses, one carrying his arms of war and one his arms of peace. Afterward, the gear from the procession was hung above his tomb: his helmet topped with a lion crest, his quilted surcoat stitched with the royal arms of England and France, his leather shield, his gauntlets, and his sword's scabbard.
That's where they stayed for nearly 600 years. The sword itself is missing. Local tradition blames Oliver Cromwell for taking it during the Civil War, though nobody can prove it. Everything else survived. The surcoat is one of the oldest heraldic garments in Europe.
In the 1950s the cathedral finally took the originals down to protect them and hung exact replicas above the tomb. The real ones sit in a glass case nearby. So if you visit Canterbury today, you can stand next to the actual helmet the most feared soldier in 14th century Europe chose to be remembered by, 650 years after he died in bed.
Roman concrete could repair its own cracks.
Some Roman buildings have stood for 2,000 years, while modern concrete can start to crumble within decades. For a long time, scientists did not fully understand why.
The Romans made their concrete from lime, water and volcanic ash from the area around Pozzuoli, near Naples. The ash reacted with the lime and created a material that grew stronger over time instead of weaker.
In 2023, a team from MIT led by Admir Masic found another piece of the puzzle, small white lumps of lime scattered through the concrete.
Scientists had always thought these lumps were a sign of careless mixing. In fact, they were the repair kit. When a crack forms and rainwater gets in, the lime dissolves and refills the crack with new mineral, sealing it from the inside.
The secret was “hot mixing.” Instead of using slaked lime, the Romans added quicklime directly to the mix. It heated up as it reacted with water and left these lumps behind on purpose.
To test the idea, the team cracked samples of concrete made with the Roman method and let water run through them. Within two weeks, the cracks had sealed completely. In concrete made without the lime lumps, the water kept flowing.
Roman harbour concrete went even further. Pliny the Elder wrote that once it touched the waves, it became a single block of stone that grew stronger every day. In 2017, geologist Marie Jackson showed he was right, seawater slowly grows rare crystals inside the concrete that hold it together.
Modern concrete has a weakness Roman concrete never had. Steel bars inside it rust, expand and crack the concrete from within. The Pantheon has no steel at all, and its 43-meter dome is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.
Victor Frankenstein's flaw is NOT that he's not as smart as he thinks.
His flaw is that he is EXACTLY as smart as he thinks, in one specific area (biology). He expects this to translate into every other aspect of life, and is taken by surprise each time he's utterly wrong.
This rings so true because it's a common human weakness. That's why Noah Chomsky thinks he knows anything about climate change, and why actors think they know about economics. Chomsky (and the actors) are smart in one area, and are probably adulated by those around him, so they assume their brainpower applies to everywhere else. Heck, you can see it in Trump or any president really.
I am a skilled designer. I think I'm really smart about design. So naturally in my heart I think I'm smart everywhere but I'm doubtless not. Heck this post may be an example of me being wrong. At least I know to allow for it.
Hellraiser is funny because most of the (initial) victims are people who are looking to push their limits but get cold feet when they realise why those limits are there. You don't feel so bad when they get sentanced to infinite torment because they opened the infinite torment cube willingly
The first movie in particular is a terrifying look at how these hunters spread and drag in people who aren't willing, too
