Today, books that shaped my life—and many others—are being challenged in schools, bookstores, and libraries by people who disagree with certain ideas or perspectives. Often, these “banned books” are written by or feature people of color and members of LGBTQ communities.
This year, I’m celebrating Banned Books Week and the freedom to read with people across the country. I wrote out a few of my thoughts, and wanted to share the stories of some folks who are working on this issue. barackobama.medium.com/heres-why-i-m-…

This Banned Books Week, I hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate the stories that need to be told. And I hope you’ll join me in reminding anyone who will listen—and even those who won’t—that the free, robust exchange of ideas has always been at the heart of American democracy.
@BarackObama No fake 1619 CRT or Trans porn smut in our public schools.
@BarackObama @freepeeper The book banning is an absolute facist -like disgrace
@BarackObama I hope you took a moment and actually read why they were banned. Incase you didn’t, they were banned for being sexually explicit and having sexually explicit images. I really hope you don’t think that’s ok.
@BarackObama While 1A is the most important issue facing America, there is certain literature that children as young as 11 should not have access to. Yet it is being promoted by the libraries. I am sure you would agree with that.
@BarackObama Why are we pretending like this? Whether or not books are stocked in public school libraries is & always has been selective/subjective. It’s not a brand new thing to deem some books inappropriate. And I don’t think it is bigoted to have concerns over this being available to kids.
@BarackObama I agree completely ❣️
