psa: If you're a junior asking for advice getting into the industry. Please, please ask people from different backgrounds. You'll likely find one you resonate with most that could actually help. I still see people throw around "Just start in QA" and that's really not a guarantee

Management in the games industry is shit. I want to be more eloquent but there is no more concise way to put it. One of my major criticisms of the games industry has always been the lack of actual management and administrative training provided. This coupled with the mistake of promoting top developers, not necessarily those with good soft skills into leadership roles is one of the things I feel is holding our industry back and has several knock on effects. ➡️ It contributes to burnout at senior level as people are not equipped to deal with the difficulties of their new responsibilities. Training provides tools that allow us to better tackle each new challenge and mitigate the emotional distress or stress that can come with it. Good management training even at mid-level provides stronger leaders and more organised and communicative principles. ➡️ If you’re a great artist/coder/designer this doesn’t necessarily mean you will be a great leader of people or projects. Being good at your development job and being good at people/project management are very different skills and sometimes not even compatible. People end up spread thin and again… burnout. Either they suffer or their direct reports suffer. Studios should support alternative career paths for these people and stop forcing them into leadership roles. Make them principles, give them responsibility over quality, workflows and tools. ➡️ The people who want power should usually be the last to have it. Sometimes you experience this as early as university group projects. Unfortunately in games it’s common to give lead roles to cunts who can talk the talk but don’t follow through. People who put themselves first and say ‘I’ not WE’ usually make for bad leaders. Big personalities can fail upwards easily. A lot of studios perpetuate this by making promotions cutthroat and competitive. You can’t lead a team that you back stabbed to get ahead of. ➡️ I have seen too many people make bad judgements on how they manage their teams based on their own experience. I was held back for a promotion because my Art Director “wasn’t a senior at my age”. People should be judged on their merits,skills and contributions, not weighted against arbitrary measurements like age, years of experience or even shipped titles. ➡️ Most of us are guilty to some degree of abusing our power. Many developers including myself got promoted into lead roles with no training and just assumed because we have power now we know what we’re doing. Someone recognised us as being worthy, yay, but that person was probably wrong. I had to step down then step sideways for a few years and learn how to actually be a proper manager. It’s something you cultivate and have to keep working on, you can be a good manager and still fall prey to bad habits. We need to equip our teams with the tools to also hold us accountable to a good standard of management. They should recognise and be able to tell us if we suck. ➡️➡️➡️ Lastly stop hiring mids as seniors and then seniors as leads based on portfolio!!??! This whole culture of changing jobs to get a promotion makes it even harder to develop the right soft skills. I don’t blame people for job hopping for promotions if they’re feeling they aren’t recognised for their growth but best case they make mistakes, learn and grow into the role over time, worst case they become arrogant. Either way it impacts those below them. A better solution would be better is studios actually recognising that they should invest in their staff and retention, cultivate growth from within, hire, roadmap and train people as the best managers are often home grown and care about the team as people. Then everybody wins. Stop perpetuating the cycle. We use external consultants to train management at Wardog. I absolutely recommend this and if your managers aren’t open to change they’d you should fire them.
