Do donations make it difficult to hold billionaires accountable for their negative actions (environmental impact of space rocket offset by massive donation for charity ?)

Do you think that the advantages of philanthropy (creation of the Learning Centre) outweigh its disadvantages (loss of autonomy of institutions, "charity washing", culture turns into business)

His wealth increased by $13 billion, thanks to a bump in the @Amazon’s share price. @JeffBezos definitely had interests in making this huge donation. 9/

Last but not least, this donation will improve Bezos’ image as a philanthropist, particularly in times he needs it. 10 days after his donation and one day after another 100 million dollars donation, he took a 10 minutes joyride above the earth despite environmental concerns 8/

THREAD One thing is clear about @JeffBezos's spending priorities. He sees a future in space both for his commercial and philanthropic investment. His #spacetourism business is off to a robust start. 1/ @prix_democratie @airandspace @smithsonian #unautrenamingestpossible

THREAD Taking the examples of @JeffBezos and the @smithsonian , we will show you how philanthropy is deeply anchored in U.S. culture. 1/ @prix_democratie @airandspace #unautrenamingestpossible #sciencespo #giveyourmoney #philanthropy #namingrights #aerospace #billionaires

So why couldn't the museum add a moral clause to the contract? No @airandspace for negotiation ? Would it jeopardise the donation? Would it be too offending for @JeffBezos ? --> @airandspace reputation at the mercy of the billionaire's behaviour🤡 3/

The museum is therefore formalising a 50 years biding relationship with the name of a very controversial businessman (Amazon pollutes ? tracks its employees? suppresses unionisation efforts ? forces small bookstore to close? acts like a monopole in e-commerce ? ) 2/

According to @MarketWatch, the provisions of the agreement with the @airandspace do not include a "moral clause" which would allow the @smithsonian to withdraw the naming rights if Bezos' actions damaged the institution's reputation 1/
