Spanish Circle meetings have continued throughout the summer and included a talk by Alan Clark on Thor Heyerdahl’s links with Tenerife.
The #German Circle broke up for the summer with a meal at Mamma Mia’s in Bradford. Members wished a fond farewell to Lucy, who will continue her German adventure by studying for a masters degree in Mainz. Viel Glück Lucy!
Circle president Clare Dewhirst spoke about a dream trip to the #Canadianrockies at a meeting of the #Spanish Circle. #Spanishconversation continues throughout the summer on Monday evenings.
A rail journey to Switzerland, staying at Zermatt and St. Moritz, was described by Sally Clegg at a meeting of the German Circle.
An excellent explanation of the conflict between Venezuela and Guyana over the Essequibo region was given by Bernie Arauz to the #Spanish Circle. This Monday Christina Craven will talk about the Atacama Desert and Clare Dewhirst about the Canadian Rockies.
The German Circle had a fascinating talk by Carol Sherrard about the life of a young lady in 1930s Germany, gleaned from diaries bought on eBay. This week Sally Clegg will talk about a train trip to St. Moritz and Zermatt. All welcome.
A little corner of Germany in China, Qingdao, was described by Lucy Allison at the German Circle. This Wednesday Harriet Ibbitson will lead a session of improvisation “Reden ist Übung - Alltag Szenarien”. New members are alway welcome.
This week’s Italian meeting “Espressioni idiomatici” has been postponed until Tuesday, April 8 and there will be no meeting on April 15.
#Italian artist and activist Carlo Levi will be the subject of an illustrated talk by Anne Spiers at this Tuesday’s Italian Circle at 7.30 pm. All welcome.
Members of the French Circle had an entertaining evening sharing memories of places and activities. The next meeting, on February 13, will be a talk on La Patagonie Sauvage.
A fascinating illustrated talk about the Incas was given by Eduardo Espinoza to the Spanish Circle. This Monday Simon Jennings will continue his theme about the evacuation of Basque children to Britain during the Spanish Civil War.
Two students from #Hamm, currently studying at #Bradforduniversity, were welcomed to the German Circle. They wanted to know how we had come to study the language and were interested in our history, dating back to 1899.
Philip and Maureen Booth told the French Circle about their wonderful rail journey to Switzerland. This took them on the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express and the Gornergrat Railway, with views of the Matterhorn. Tonight’s French talk is about Denmark.
Eddie Emsworth gave a great talk about composers and the history of the piano, interspersed with a comic look at his own experiences of playing the piano. This Wednesday, November 20, is German conversation. All welcome.

Although numbers were depleted, members of the German Circle still enjoyed a lively evening of conversation. At this week’s meeting Eddie Emsworth will talk about “Die deutschen Komponisten und die Geschichte des Klaviers”. All welcome.
Italian conversation tonight has been cancelled. The next Italian meeting will be a talk on “l Valdesi” by Dennis O’Keefe on November 26.
The fascinating story of Krupp steel, with its family fortunes and scandals, was told by Kirstin Charlesworth at a meeting of the German Circle. Der Leeds-Liverpool-Kanal will be the next subject on October 16. All welcome.
