Another great year for South Dakota pheasant hunting! Last year, over 1.1 million pheasants were bagged — an 8.6% increase from 2021’s season. South Dakota has the best pheasant hunting in the world.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the acceptance of more than one million acres into the Conservation Reserve Program’s (CRP) general signup. Learn more at the 🔗 link below. These acres, combined with the anticipated enrollment of CRP’s grassland and continuous sign ups, will help offset the 2 million acres scheduled to expire in 2023 — resulting in a net gain in total acres for the third consecutive year. “Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are excited to celebrate another successful CRP general sign up,” said Jim Inglis, director of government affairs for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “These numbers illustrate continued demand for the program across the country, and we’re pleased to see the third consecutive year with a net increase in CRP acres.” “We look forward to using the momentum generated by this good news as a catalyst for further investment in conservation as we work with our elected officials in Congress,” Inglis said. “Improvements to the 2023 Farm Bill could expand CRP’s ability to provide conservation options — helping to achieve multiple land use goals including increased wildlife habitat, improved water quality, soil health benefits, climate resiliency measures and safeguarding rural economies.” pheasantsforever.org/BlogLanding/Bl…

Trying to plant some corn, but before bush hogging and plowing I decided to walk and look around for nesting hens in the plot. So glad I did! I can hold off until this momma hatches these little ones. #turkey #cantstoptheflop

South Dakota is home to the best pheasant hunting in the world. In order to restore and retain pheasant habitat development, we must work with landowners and sportsmen — and we will continue to open doors for more youth participation in the great outdoors. Join us for a celebration of our heritage and conservation. @Williebosshog is coming as a special guest!  ➡️sdhabitatfund.org/gala

As we continue to celebrate the program’s 20th anniversary, the number of acres impacted by Farm Bill biologist’s across the country is about to surpass 15 million. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s team of 268 FBB’s are adding to that number every day, addressing habitat needs from the bobwhite pine savannas of the Coastal Plains to the sage steppe of the American West. While those 15 million acres are thanks in large part to the long-tenured employees who pioneered the FBB program, some amazing work is also being done across the country by the next generation, who will continue to drive the program in the years and decades to come. “For 20 years our team of Farm Bill Biologists have been leading the way for conservation from South Dakota to Alabama to Oregon,” said Rachel Bush, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s private lands conservation programs manager. “And we have no intentions of slowing down, we’re working hard to develop the next generation of natural resources leaders.” Let’s look ahead at the future of the Fam Bill biologist program by highlighting some of the best new minds in the field at the 🔗 link below! quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Bl…

Over 1,700 species of fish, wildlife and plants are listed as endangered or threatened in the nation. Agencies like @USFWS and @USGS work with state, Tribal and local partners to restore endangered species, like the critically endangered Attwater’s prairie-chicken.

Pheasant Fact Friday!💡 The hen will NOT start sitting on the nest until it is full (12 to 14 eggs). So why doesn't the hen sit and protect the eggs earlier? ... because of skunks, raccoons, and foxes, that's why! You see, spring weather that is too hot or too cool threatens nests only once every few years. But predators threaten nests every year. They are always hungry. If the hen did sit on the first egg laid in the nest, that egg would hatch 12 days before the last egg laid. That give a raccoon 12 days to find the nest and chicks. So the hen waits until all eggs are laid before starting to incubate, so they all hatch at the same time. Then she can quickly take the chicks away from the stinky nest. The fox may smell and find the hatched eggs, but the chicks will be long gone. #pheasantsforever #pheasents #pheasanthunting #pheasantfactfriday

As spring moves forward, land managers will begin to turn their attention to food and cover plots that will support wildlife during the upcoming winter’s inclement weather conditions. For many of us, sorghum is the cover of choice for a variety of reasons – food, thermal cover, loafing cover, etc. But keep in mind that not all sorghum varieties are created equal. Aside from color variations in the seeds such as red, orange, bronze, tan, white, and black, there are different applications that can affect the outcome of your hard work.
