Reduce tension by creating more space. Pause and smile slightly before responding. Let the words come out gently. Even if you're not angry, responding while high-strung or anxious will come across as irritable or irritating.

Hurt people hurt people. But entitled people also hurt people. Avoid hiring/working with/for people who are too used to getting their own way and too upset when they don't. If you must, stay cautious and keep targets off your back. In the long run, they are spoiling for a fight.
