Professor Ruha Benjamin (@ruha9) using her honorary degree address at Spelman to denounce Atlanta’s Cop City, the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, and the repression of student activists 💜
University of Southern California has cancelled valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech after pro-Israel groups condemned her for sharing information about Palestine. “I'm only advocating for human equality and for the sanctity of human life,” says Tabassum.
columbia’s students against apartheid were right in 1985 and the students against the genocide in gaza are right today. the university responded the same way both times: mass arrests africanactivist.msu.edu/recordFiles/21…
Apparently a lot of academics need to be reminded that ‘neutrality,’ ‘staying out of it,’ ‘it’s complicated,’ ‘both sides are wrong,’ ‘we shouldn’t politicise things,’ etc etc means you’re absolutely taking a side. At least own it.
New @BeaconPressBks volume just arrived -- and I have a chapter in here, with my @PENamerica colleagues @jonfreadom and @JRTtager, on "The Rise of Educational Gag Orders." Many other great pieces in here as well. Buy The Right to Learn here: amazon.com/Right-Learn-Re…
The Edward Said reading room at Columbia’s Butler library. Houses nearly 2000 volumes from the Said’s personal collection. Lovely place to work, and where I did most the preparation for my comps at the end of 2021. Thinking about it now, for some reason
It's important to remember that Edward Said taught at Columbia for 40 years. Columbia has a Centre for Palestinian Studies due to his scholarship. He unabashedly navigated those wretched spaces; confronting and exposing what no one else would— to build an entire new discipline.
Not that they would want to return, but @Columbia and @BarnardCollege should immediately reverse the suspension and eviction of its students who were wrongfully arrested and have the constitutional right to protest on campus! Period.
Columbia tonight: music, dancing, and poetry under drones and the near-full moon, beside a glowing Butler Library… A response poem to Refaat’s “If I must die” & a Walid Daqqa reading… Peaceful, clear-eyed, w community-supplied food, blankets, pillows, all for life and justice.
BREAKING: In solidarity with Columbia, hundreds of Yale students have just constructed an encampment of tents outside a Board of Trustees meeting. Organizers say they won’t leave until Yale divests from all military weapons manufacturing. FREE PALESTINE!

Huge news: The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation has become the first federally recognized tribe to get a portion of their land back in Illinois. Illinois now has tribal lands.
I have been conducting research about the 1968 Columbia protests for such a long time, but I honestly do not know what to say right now. Except, perhaps, that student movements have been one of the most progressive, courageous political avantgardes of the past century
“They keep talking about these years of peace. Peace? What peace? They’ve been fighting 30 years of war elsewhere.” -Toni Morrison (1993)
A big story that hasn't gotten enough attention: a VA ed official tried to stop gen ed diversity requirements at 2 unis by targeting the syllabi of 27 profs. As we argue @RTDNEWS, gov't censorship of DEI initiatives inevitably leads to faculty censorship. richmond.com/zzstyling/view…

June Jordan’s “MLK in Memoriam” says best what this day means. But this week we will be working with another poem… In 1978 June Jordan presented l “Poem for South African Women” at the UN, drawing ancestral energy from protests dating back to 1956. sangodare.podia.com/irreversible-a…

Today we're going to the Old Combahee Plantation, which just sold for $9 million: postandcourier.com/business/sc-pl…
Old Black people good for that lmao. You call them Aunt Peggy your whole life just to find out her name Geraldine at her funeral.
“I took a special interest in looking out for people who do their thing, take care of their families, and they always get f—ed with at the job.”
Volkswagen auto workers in Chattanooga became the first in the South not in the Big Three to successfully unionize. They weren't swayed by mgmt's preemptive 11% raises and learned from UAW workers' wins as well as their own prior losses, @Lfelizleon wrote: labornotes.org/2024/04/histor…
academia attempts to kill every piece of your desire to be creative, imaginative, and deal with the messiness of human life. it really just makes you get to a point where you write bullshit articles so you can keep getting a paycheck.
Professor Ruha Benjamin (@ruha9) using her honorary degree address at Spelman to denounce Atlanta’s Cop City, the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, and the repression of student activists 💜
yes, Columbia evicted students last night, 2wks after Vanderbilt did the same. they arrested students for “trespassing” on the campus they pay tuition at, a strategy we’ve seen at other schools including Pomona. this is what the strategy on Palestine campus suppression *has been*
University of Southern California has cancelled valedictorian Asna Tabassum’s commencement speech after pro-Israel groups condemned her for sharing information about Palestine. “I'm only advocating for human equality and for the sanctity of human life,” says Tabassum.
USC valedictorian Asna Tabassum joined me on NewsNight tonight after her school cancelled her graduation speech citing “threats.” What she planned to say and what she thinks really happened:
columbia’s students against apartheid were right in 1985 and the students against the genocide in gaza are right today. the university responded the same way both times: mass arrests africanactivist.msu.edu/recordFiles/21…
I want yall to understand that what is happening in Louisiana is not a “Louisiana” problem. This is a national problem. Leaving isn’t a sustainable option because the goal is that there will be nowhere to move to.
"Academia is a place, not a calling." Shout put to @KacieLucchini for throwing my best words back in my face and putting me in community with some of the greatest students and staff activists, always demanding for more and better. All love, all the time 🫶🏿✊🏿!!
The Center for Campus History hosted a student lunch today with @DavarianBaldwin focused on scholar activism and among the many thought-provoking things that were said there is one thing I can’t shake. It was so good I had to write it down.
Thinking about when I was at Columbia and how they spared NO expense to roll out the red carpet for Vaclav Havel as a special yearlong guest in residence, ostensibly to teach us about using your voice to speak up for freedom despite threat of inprisonment or retaliation. LOLLL
He unabashedly navigated those wretched spaces; confronting and exposing what no one else would— to build an entire new discipline.
students at Columbia showing us how it’s done, from their unionization effort to their refusal to abide the funding of genocide(s)!! they deserve so much more than this terrible world they’ve been given and they’re not just fighting back, but fighting harder!! i’m in awe!!!
Protesting students are doing exactly what education is designed to help them do: attempt to change the world. For learning the lesson too well, they get state violence.
It literally shouldn't matter at all whether you agree with them or support their cause. These college protesters are passionate young people trying to do something to contribute to their world & its hardest realities. Their institutions owe them dialogue at least, not arrests.
Not that they would want to return, but @Columbia and @BarnardCollege should immediately reverse the suspension and eviction of its students who were wrongfully arrested and have the constitutional right to protest on campus! Period.
