HOW IS ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH Sunlight, through what are known as "non-image forming effects" determine or effect the majority of physiological processes in your body. The spectrum of sunlight is constantly moving or changing throughout the day. Variables like the intensity, wavelength combination, brightness and timing of sunlight all change over the day. These variables can signal certain physiological process in your body to turn on or off leading to things like high blood pressure or lower blood pressure, an active immune system or a dysregulated immune system, good sleep architecture or bad sleep architecture, feeling alert or depressed, strong or wimpy. Even though these variables change throughout the day, the neat thing is that there is a rhythm to the madness. Sunlight changes over the day but day after day the changes follow the same rhythm and timing. This changes slowly over time as the seasons change. One of the major problems with artificial lighting is that these signals/variables (wavelength, intensity, timing, lux) are all static throughout the day. They never change or fluctuate daily or seasonally and physiologically processes in your body miss out on a major trigger or push that they need to operate optimally.
