Parts of this post are a little off topic, but as I am on holidays, it's allowed. Fish and the transportation of. Birds Eye built its business on quick-frozen fish, first in the USA and then in the UK. The brand’s fish business sat right at the start of bulk frozen food processing. Rail played a major role in the mid-20th century for the movement of both raw fish and finished frozen products, but dedicated rail fish traffic ended in 1964 as processing, road refrigeration, and retail supply chains buried it. Today's school lesson: Clarence Birdseye (yes, really) founded Birdseye Seafoods in 1922. He developed plate-freezing patents, including multi-plate freezers using chilled plates or ammonia, and packed fish in cartons for sale. The company was acquired in 1929 and became part of General Foods. Early distribution problems were the lack of refrigerated transport, warehouses, and retail freezers. In the US, Birdseye’s firm leased insulated railroad cars in 1944 to enable nationwide distribution of frozen foods. The core product remained fish fillets and later processed items. Frozen foods reached the UK in 1938. Unilever took a major stake after the Second World War and fully owned the brand by the late 1950s. A fish-processing plant opened on South Denes Road in Great Yarmouth in 1945; Lowestoft followed in 1949, with further production in Grimsby. Fish-finger production began in Yarmouth in 1955, with the prototypes using herring, however consumers much preferred cod. Birds Eye marketed the product as convenient and later claimed the invention of the modern fish finger, though similar items existed earlier. Billions have since been sold in the UK. The company bought fish at dockside auctions, imported frozen blocks from Scandinavia, and briefly owned a fishing company from 1965 to 1969 to secure its cod supply. By the late 1960s, a large share of the UK whitefish catch went to frozen-food processors. Changing tastes and convenience foods reduced demand for traditional herring while boosting whitefish products. Railways changed the 19th-century British fishing industry. From the 1840s–1850s onward, lines connected the North Sea ports Grimsby, Hull, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Aberdeen & Fleetwood, not a North Sea port, to the inland towns and cities, making fresh fish widely available for most of the population, rather than just a local or preserved fish. Special fish vans, which soon had insulation fitted, ran as express goods or were attached to passenger trains. Some routes were extremely long, such as the Aberdeen to London service. In the late 1940s/early 1950s, roughly 75% of landed fish moved by rail, amounting to thousands of tons daily and many wagonloads weekly. The LNER and its predecessors handled most of the traffic, as most of the major fishing ports lay on their territory. Birds Eye used the railway network for finished frozen goods. Highly insulated AF/AFP containers mounted on conflats, some fitted with dry-ice bunkers, finished in the most distinctive Birds Eye livery. Trains of these vehicles appeared on the Great Yarmouth quayside; traffic moved out via Vauxhall or South Town. Raw fish may also have arrived by rail for processing. This was a very early form of intermodal containerisation for temperature-controlled goods. British Railways withdrew from dedicated fish traffic in 1964 under the Beeching-era rationalisation. A May 1964 scheme slashed the number of fish trains from the main ports and concentrated remaining flows on a few railheads, with the fish trade expected to organise onward road distribution. And we all know how that would turn out … Dedicated services soon ended; only occasional boxed consignments lingered briefly on passenger trains before those too stopped as leaking boxes damaged floors and pretty much made for a very unpleasant, lingering, hard-to-shift smell. Many insulated fish vans were reassigned to parcels. The building of a network of motorways and mechanical refrigeration fitted on lorries made road transport cheaper, faster, and more flexible. Birds Eye itself commissioned a £500,000 fleet of 60 refrigerated articulated vehicles in 1965, Leyland Beavers with Crane Fruehauf trailers and insulated GRP bodies to move product from its factories to its 45 regional depots. These were operated by contract hauliers. Large producers like Birds Eye froze and packed fish near the ports. This reduced the need for high-speed movement of highly perishable wet fish inland. Frozen packaged goods were more stable and suited supermarket supply chains. Multiple retailers preferred integrated road distribution. The traditional fragmented wet-fish trade, consisting of many small merchants, struggled to negotiate with BR or adapt, while fish processors changed distribution. Historian Martin Wilcox notes that post-war supply-chain changes, plus negotiation failures and trade divisions, made rail withdrawal more likely. Average loads on fish trains were often low, resulting in BR judging the traffic to be uneconomic regardless of the earlier investment in insulated vans. Overfishing, smaller catches, and later quotas hit ports. The switch to fast-foods and working patterns favoured processed whitefish over the traditional herring. Rail remained useful for bulk or long-haul in the 1950s but lost the combination of speed, volume, and perishability that had once favoured it. Frozen-food distribution continued to grow, but only on roads. Birds Eye’s Lowestoft factory still operates today as a major frozen-food site, though the original Yarmouth plant and the classic rail-container era are long gone. Joining the EEC in 1973 required the UK to accept the Common Fisheries Policy, which treated member states’ waters as a shared resource, introducing the iniquitous quota rules. This added to the simultaneous collapse of distant-water fishing after the Icelandic Cod Wars and overfishing. The result was a considerably smaller, very regulated UK fleet that lost exclusive control of its large fishing grounds and received quota shares many fishermen still view as unfair.
