1919 was Red Summer. These soldiers came home from World War I & instead of appreciation, were met with white mobs determined to make sure these men didn’t forget their place in the racist American hierarchy. A white mob even attacked a homecoming celebration for African-American veterans of World War I. Our soldiers fought back though. They turned their military training against racist mobs. So don’t ever let anyone lecture you on patriotism & what it means to be American. We are the most patriotic people with the least to show for it. Our heroism has often been met with envy, theft, hatred & terrorism. If we want three National anthems that belong to us & only us, we deserve them.

@BreakingBrown I think this and WW2 and Korean War, is what kicked off Civil Rights Era in the 60s. If your fighting in all these wars and getting disrespected by racist civilians when you get back in uniform, your going to fight for a change.
@BreakingBrown This. That. And the end. No one gets to police ADOS's patriotism.
@BreakingBrown Veterans suffered disproportionate violence and lynchings. Some for daring to wear there uniforms. eji.org/reports/target…
@BreakingBrown Participating in this evil is tantamount to creating it. As @BreakingBrown lays out so well "This principle applies to inheritances from this country's slavery past, which, when passively accepting this, cursed dripping blood wealth, bcomes as egregious as actually owning slaves!
