We certainly don’t know his financial situation however, most small investments like this usually aren’t extremely profitable…if this property was, a large real estate investment company would probably have bought it off of him by now, he would have profited and rid himself of this squatter problem. This has been going on for almost a decade, so he may owe more than what the property is worth and cannot sell it. In the movies, people with rental properties are generally portrayed as rolling in money, but imagine it’s you and you managed to secure a loan for this investment property with very little margin to cover a tenant not paying rent. Your plan would be to budget and be thrifty with your money so you could afford the loan in hopes that in 10 years you’d have some income from you investment, coupled with all the attorney fees, now this guy is financially struggling and is barrowing money to send his daughter to school. I get your point, it’s only one tenant, use the profit from the other tenants, but that only works for large corporations that can afford a disaster like this…not the everyday Joe that invested his savings into a small business opportunity like this.

In the article it mentions that they had to borrow money for their daughters education, which means they don’t have a ton of disposable income. They also mention that this squatter doesn’t pay rent which means, and is clearly stated in the article, the income they make from the other tenants is negated by the squatter’s delinquency. This man most likely doesn’t own the building outright, which means he’s making payments to a financing company each month on the building. Also take into account that the landlord has been paying attorney fees for over 9 years to get them out…you think attorneys in New York are cheap? The man cannot endlessly continue to incur these expenses, which is exactly what the squatter’s strategy is, so he’s asking for help from the public. Make sense?

I don’t care if this man is under the influence or not and regardless of the circumstances that initiated this situation, this man demonstrated a tremendous amount of restraint and control. His demeanor and courage in the face of this mob is absolutely incredible…very high level emotional intelligence on display here.

Jennifer I like your suggestion about permitting a degree in a known good job market. If this was the case, then universities would be forced to cut out the bullshit classes that provide no opportunities and quite frankly contribute negatively to society. This would also allow more university resources to go towards the development of quality programs.

I had some Mormons stop bye my house before. Even though I wasn’t interested in converting to Mormon, I admired the fact that these young people weren’t out getting into trouble like selling drugs or other destructive activities. Since I already had the grill fired up, I put a couple extra steaks on and had a nice conversation with them. My sentiment was I didn’t have to agree with them to be respectful and kind, I just treated them as I would like someone to treat my kids.
