In The Art of Fiction, John Gardner once discussed & wrote about how all great literature is one of two stories: a man goes on a journey, or a stranger comes to town. This book is both. — CG Fewston Crossroads pause. Late 1901 Texas. People and society can often mistake Generosity for Privilege. — CG Fewston, Cowboy — or, A Communion of Saints A canteen offered across a saddle. Late 1901 Texas. Henry and the boy. The gift is water, time, and a name treated as enough. Generosity is not privilege. The book keeps saying so — and showing it. A boy, a journey, and the country that makes a man or breaks him. I completed a novel: Cowboy — or, A Communion of Saints — late 1901 Texas — Christmas Day, December 25, 2026. October 17, 1901: the boy runs, age fifteen. October 17, 1979: my birthday. The novel kept both. Henry belongs only to 1901. The book opens on Christmas Day 1891 in flashback, the boy at five. The main ride is October 17 through November 7, 1901. McCarthy’s Texas road — All the Pretty Horses / Cormac’s Road — among the books this one was written toward. Kinship in length and country. Brief. Honest. Not inheritance claimed. October 17. In the book: late 1901 Texas. The boy is fifteen. He runs. The day the boy runs — and the author’s birthday. October 17, 1901 — the boy runs. October 17, 1979 — CG Fewston’s birthday. Same calendar day. Kept in the novel. “Let’s ride, kid.” Cowboy — or, A Communion of Saints · Christmas Day 2026 #CowboyNovel #1901Texas #WesternFiction #CGFewston #ComingChristmasDay

THE TEXAS ROAD Cormac McCarthy • CG Fewston. Nearest kinship in length and setting: McCarthy’s Texas road — Pretty Horses / Cormac’s Road — then Fewston’s quieter ride through late 1901 — Henry Bartholomew Roberts and a boy who answers to Cowboy, after the frontier was called closed. I completed a novel. Kinship in the road. Not a claim on the name. A boy, a journey, and the country that makes a man or breaks him.
