As a founder, you know that at the start your product has a lot of constraints it has to work with. Your architectures are not fully evolved, supplier options and access to scaled processes are limited, and costs are still ugly. But you bet on a few magical things in your product to really give yourselves that proverbial 'foot in the door' in a legacy industry. Something that will bring the early set of buyers in as you feverishly build out everything else. We've now spent over a decade building the technology and architecture that make an Ather what it is. That magic stuff. Now, we can take all of those learnings much further. Take the technology, the architecture and everything we've learnt over the years, and bring it together in a scooter built for a much larger audience. That's Ather Konarc. Launching on 29th August at Ather Community Day.

The sun is rising on our new scooter 🌅 Can you guess its name?

In last year's Community Day, one of the most viral features was Pothole Alerts. The fact that a company could build up a country wide database of potholes, poorly designed speed breakers and general road quality blew people's minds. Well that feature is finally going live! We've started rolling out Pothole+ Alerts to our Gen 2 and above customers (450 Apex, 450 X, and Rizta Z). This has been one of those ideas we've wanted to build for a long time. In fact, almost 9 years. Every Ather ships with onboard compute and connectivity. Over time that connectivity has allowed us to build large data sets and build features for our owners on top of those. Pothole+ is probably the best implementation of that yet. The challenge was never the idea. It was the data. You need lakhs of connected scooters riding the same roads before you have enough fleet intelligence to make something like this work. Today, we finally have that. If you're navigating, your Ather can now alert you about potholes, broken patches, uneven roads, and speed bumps ahead. You'll see it on the dashboard, hear it through the scooter, and, if you're wearing Halo (our smart helmet) or even a Bluetooth headset, through that as well. But the more exciting part is what comes next. Navigation has always been about finding the fastest route. Now, it can also help you find the smoothest one, using road intelligence built using millions of kilometres ridden by the Ather community. Pothole+ Alerts are just the beginning. We are going to build a ton more on top of this data set!

Delhi has approved a new EV Policy, marking one of the most significant city level pushes for electrification in India. What stands out is not just the scale of the investment, but the way the policy has been designed. The combination of incentives, phased electrification mandates and charging infrastructure creates a very strong foundation. More critically, if Delhi can become majority EV, then it has the opportunity to become a benchmark for the rest of the country. Congratulations to the Delhi Government for taking this long term view. For a long time, India's role in the auto industry was defined by manufacturing. EVs are changing that. For the first time, India is genuinely building at the leading edge of an industry - the global light electric vehicle industry. From battery packs, software, fast charging to safety - intelligence, power electronics, vehicle software and embedded systems. Much of this progress has been driven by startups and new age companies that have led the investments in product and deep technology - these investments have been the engine that has pulled the industry forward and put in full steam now (pun intended). Supporting these new age companies is critical if we want to sustain this momentum. India has the talent, the scale, and the market. The opportunity now is to translate that into global tech leadership. I shared a few thoughts on what it will take to get there, together with Aravind Mani (River Mobility) and Saurav Kumar (Euler Motors). @FinancialXpress

I have had the opportunity to engage with several policy makers on the topic of Auto PLI excluding startups and I just can’t believe that they would think so! It cannot be emphasised enough - current framing of Auto PLI needs to stay closely aligned with the moment India is in. Over the last decade, the electric two wheeler ecosystem in India has evolved through contributions from both incumbents and electric first companies. Many of these startups invested early in product, software, power electronics, and localisation, often without the cushion of legacy scale. In doing so, they have pushed the boundaries and pulled in the competition to together build a competitive but a very vibrant and dynamic EV market. Today in many many markets it is the ‘new age EV companies’ that are industry leaders in not just innovation and tech, but in absolute volumes and market shares. Aligned with the PLI’s vision, it is these ‘startups and new age EV companies’ that are investing hundred, even thousands of crores in most new manufacturing capacities for EVs. For example at Ather we have already employed more than 4000 people directly and tens of thousands indirectly in our channels and supply chains. We have invested thousands of crores in RnD and direct capex and on top of this we are now investing 2000 crores in our new green field facility in Maharasthra. This is literally what PLI was hoping as an outcome and is being realized by a non-PLI holder, against all odds. And most crucially, they are doing all this while also investing heavily in R&D and domestic value addition (DVA). DVA benchmarks are similar across PLI and non PLI players so it would be wrong to assume that startups don’t lead DVA requirements. These companies have consistently pushed deeper on indigenous development, building capabilities that are at par with, and in some cases ahead of, the broader industry. An EV policy architecture that defines champions primarily through legacy scale, not even scale within the EV industry, can create an unintended imbalance. It places emerging EV manufacturers at a 13 to 16 percent cost disadvantage at a stage where they are continuing to invest heavily in capability building. Over time, this will influence how the market evolves, even as the goal is to build both scale and future ready capability. In this train of EV industry if legacy businesses are the bogeys, startups and new age companies are the engine. You cannot take the engine out of the equation and hope for the bogeys to move forward themselves. If India’s ambition is to lead in electric mobility, policy needs to recognise where innovation and capability are being built. Much of the work around indigenous platforms, battery systems, software, and domestic value addition is happening within electric first companies, and they will continue to set global benchmarks in design and technology. What is needed is calibration of PLI, not overhaul. More flexible eligibility, aligned with localisation and R&D intensity, can help ensure we are building long term capability, not just near term scale.
