This morning I had one theme come up in two separate conversations. One with an MLB coach and the other a D1 volleyball coach. In player development, not every problem needs to be fixed and not every gap needs to be filled. We were discussing players who chase improvements and try to turn weaknesses into strengths, but they forget that when you adjust one thing, something else gets affected. When you tinker with one piece of your game, you affect the whole system. Fixing a weakness can sometimes mute a strength. You don’t win by becoming a jack of all trades. You win by becoming elite at a few.

As promised, here’s the full video of Thomas Hammock’s impassioned remarks on the state of the transfer portal. Hammock briefly highlighted his own experience as college athlete, saying he considers the lessons he learned in college more valuable than any financial incentive. “I would do it again for free — *for free.* Because of the things I learned. That’s why I’m standing here today: because of what I learned in college. Not because of how much somebody gave me.” 🎥: @NIUAthletics

It doesn't look like the replay of today's presser is posted on YouTube yet. Once it is, I'll share the clip of Hammock's remarks on the transfer portal here.

Unusual things for coaches to celebrate: -‘uncoachable' players - they help you improve your teaching skills -players with 'poor attitudes' - they help you appreciate individual differences -players who won't team - they help you learn more about task & social cohesion

One way to stand out is to look for pockets of low competition. Wake up early—less traffic, fewer people. Go deeper or narrower in your field—less noise, more space. People are drawn to where it is crowded. Look for the quiet spaces inside your areas of interest. Excellence often hides at the edges.

Keanu Reeves once said: "I’m at the stage in life where I stay out of arguments. Even if you say 1+1=5, you’re right. Have fun." Here are 9 things I learned from him:

Another example of be an athlete & get the job done. This time by Salvy. Zero chance of getting his body behind this pitch so he reaches out & knocks it down w/ his mitt. Notice how he doesn’t squeeze to close the mitt & instead keeps it wide open & “paddles” the ball. (Cont.)

“Cool doesn’t win. You have to be willing to do the uncomfortable things that go into winning. We will not win until we're humble enough to do the things it takes to win games. Winners know why they win. They know tangibles win games. Losers don't know why they lose.”

Do we want to be confident? Yes. Is not feeling confident a reason to perform poorly? No. Just because you feel a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to act a certain way. Acknowledge your feelings. Choose your responses.

Can't pull the ball? Try the "Keep it Fair" drill 1️⃣ Feed super inside, hitter tries to pull ball over foul pole with backspin 2️⃣ Helps teach rotating the barrel with torso and arms, not pushing it forward with hands
