No so. The "Bomber Mafia" prohibited the development and use of maximum capacity drop tank installation on the P-47. When common sense overcame doctrine, P-47s could go as deep into Germany as the bombers needed them to. The P-51s took over the European theater because for the same cost of 2 P-47s the 8th could get 3 P-51s.

Wow! I get so tired of hearing about this plane than may have been as fast as a single engined P-47M. I know the "M" had hardware issues because they weren't pickled properly for their Atlantic Ocean shipment. But that's not a design problem. The XP-47J was faster and so was the XP-72, a derivative of the P-47. The Dornier Pfiel had overheating problems that were never fixed that actually were a design problem. If the U.S. had been as desperate as Germany, the XP-72 could have been converted from "Experimental" to production. The XP-72 was only about 25-45 mph slower than an Me-262. Me-262 had throttles that had to manipulated with a very soft (slow) touch or the turbojet would flame out.
