✉️ Through-the-mail autographs: the hobby's best-kept secret ✍️ TTM collecting means mailing a card to a player and politely asking them to sign it. Plenty of athletes still do it, especially retired players and minor leaguers. How it works:
1️⃣ Find a mailing address. Players often sign at their team's spring training complex, or at home if they're retired. Collector sites keep updated address lists and success reports.
2️⃣ Write a short, sincere handwritten letter. Name a favorite memory from their career. A personal note gets noticed.
3️⃣ Include the card (1 or 2, never a stack) in a top loader or penny sleeve.
4️⃣ Always add a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) so they can mail it back for free.
5️⃣ Be patient. Returns can take a few weeks, a few months, or sometimes years. Pro tips 💡
• Retired legends and minor league prospects tend to have the best return rates.
• Some players ask for a small donation to charity, so read the success reports first.
• Keep a log of what you sent, who you sent it to and when, so you know what's still out.
• Don't send cards you can't afford to lose. Not everything comes back. The best part? A TTM signature comes with a story, and sometimes even a personal note from the player. It's the most affordable way to build an autograph collection. 📬 Have you ever gotten a TTM return you didn't expect? 🔦 Set Spotlight: 1990 Donruss Baseball 🟥 You'll know it instantly from the bright red borders with the paint-splatter script. It's one of the most recognizable designs of the junk wax era. 📦 Like most sets from that time it was printed in huge numbers, so most base cards are easy to find. What's hard is finding them in top condition. 🔍 That red border is the catch. Chipping and edge wear stand out on it right away, so true gem-mint copies are much tougher than the print run would suggest. It's also known for error and variation cards, which set collectors love to hunt. ⭐ Notable cards include Juan Gonzalez, Sammy Sosa and Bernie Williams rookies, plus stars like Ken Griffey Jr., Nolan Ryan and Barry Bonds. What was the last live sports event you went to?

⚾ Bobby Shantz: proof that size doesn't decide greatness 📏 Shantz stood only about 5'6", but the lefty had one of baseball's great seasons in 1952. He went 24-7 for the Philadelphia A's and won the AL MVP. 🧤 He was also an elite fielder. Shantz won the first eight Gold Gloves ever handed out for pitchers, starting in 1957, in both leagues. 🃏 For collectors, his early-'50s Topps and Bowman cards are a great affordable pickup. You get MVP-era vintage with real history, at a fraction of what the big names cost. Who's your favorite underrated vintage player to collect? 👇 #BobbyShantz #VintageCards #BaseballCards #TheHobby #1952Topps

What is the last card you purchased?

⚾ The set that changed everything: 1952 Topps 🧱 This was the first big Topps baseball release, with 407 cards. Topps went big on card size, and it put team logos and player stats on the cards, which set the template for basically every baseball card that followed. 👑 The headliner is Mickey Mantle #311. It's not technically his rookie (that's 1951 Bowman), but it's the most iconic post-war card in the hobby. 🌊 The high numbers (#311–407) came out late in the season and didn't sell well. Topps famously dumped leftover cases into the Atlantic Ocean years later, which is part of why high-number cards are so tough to find today. 🔍 Collectors still chase the full set. Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Eddie Mathews' rookie card are all in it, and finding well-centered, sharp copies is still a challenge more than 70 years later. 🚨 PSA theft update On Oct 13, a FedEx truck was broken into right after picking up customer orders outside PSA's Santa Ana, CA facility. 📦 6,451 graded items are on PSA's published stolen list, including a 1st Edition Base Set Charizard and 19 sports 1/1s
💰 Police estimated $963K+ at the time, with the final value still being tallied
🔒 PSA deactivated every stolen cert and shared the list with marketplaces and auction houses
🚔 Santa Ana PD and the FBI are investigating, and no arrests have been reported
💵 PSA refunded grading fees, and orders on its return label are paid at fair market value up to declared value Takeaways for collectors 👇
✅ Declare an accurate value when you submit, because payouts are capped at what you declare
✅ Use the insured return option and know who's on the hook if you use your own label
✅ Before buying a PSA slab from a seller you don't know, run the cert and check PSA's stolen list
✅ If a listed card turns up, don't buy it. Report it to the FBI LA office (310-477-6565) or Santa Ana PD (714-245-8345) Sources: Santa Ana PD via AP and CBS LA, PSA (Oct 23), CardWire #TheHobby #PSA #SportsCards #Pokemon #CardCollecting

📜 Hobby history: The T206 Honus Wagner is the hobby's original holy grail. It's a tobacco card from the early 1900s that's famously scarce, and Wagner reportedly didn't want his likeness used to sell tobacco. More than a century later, people are still chasing it. #HonusWagner #T206 #VintageCards #HobbyHistory

🏆 Card Grading Company Tier List 🟥 S: PSA. The king of resale. 2.46M cards graded in September per GemRate, nobody else is close.
🟧 A: SGC + BGS. SGC is the vintage specialist, BGS has subgrades and the Black Label chase.
🟨 B: CGC + TAG. CGC set a record at 962K but it's mostly TCG. TAG is the tech pick.
🟩 C: Arena Club + AGS. Grade, vault and sell in one place, plus budget volume (AGS did 63K in Sept).
🟦 D: GMA, KSA, MNT, PCG. Cheap and active, but thinner resale.
🟪 F: HGA. Not a knock on the slabs, it's on pause after the uCollect acquisition with no relaunch date yet. Opinion based on resale and market share. Volumes from GemRate's September 2026 recap. Who did I rank too high or too low? 👇 #TheHobby #SportsCards #PSA #SGC #CardGrading

What was your last card graded by PSA? Show and tell edition

📊 SGC grading: September vs. September Sept 2025: ~60K cards graded, down 59% YoY 📉
Sept 2026: ~46K cards graded, down 24% YoY and up 8% vs August Still shrinking year over year, but the drop has slowed a lot. 👀 Last fall GemRate said SGC was going "boutique" and would settle around 30–40K cards a month, and September came in above that. Sept 2025's most-graded SGC card: 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson #482 (206), ahead of the '89 Upper Deck Griffey Jr (130) and '90 Score Bo Jackson (103). 🏀 Basketball cards to watch right now: 1️⃣ Victor Wembanyama: his rookie Prizm is still one of the hobby's steadiest cards. Pay attention to the gap between PSA 10 and raw copies.
2️⃣ Cooper Flagg: the newest rookie everyone's chasing. Keep an eye on his first licensed cards as more products hit shelves.
3️⃣ Anthony Edwards: a superstar who's still on the rise, and his rookie cards move with every big game.
4️⃣ Luka Dončić: a blue-chip name, and his rookies hold value through every hobby cycle.
5️⃣ Caitlin Clark: she brought new collectors in, and her cards cross over between WNBA and mainstream buyers. Buy the player and the card, not the hype. What's on your watchlist? 👇 #TheHobby #NBACards #Wemby #CooperFlagg #Collect

⚾ 1982 Topps Cal Ripken Jr.: the Iron Man's rookie year. There are two cards to know. Base set #21 is the Orioles Future Stars card, which Cal shares with two teammates, and 1982 Topps Traded #98T is his solo rookie, the one most collectors chase. Ripken played 2,632 straight games, a record that still stands, so his cards have the kind of story that keeps demand steady. 1980s cards have off-center and soft-corner issues, so high-grade copies carry the real premium. If you're buying, buy graded and know which version you're getting. #CalRipken #Orioles #1982Topps #BaseballCards #VintageCards
