#Subduction zone scientists: ever wonder what that fault you study looks like? This is the subduction interface at ~30 km depths (but now at the surface, thanks exhumation). 📍Catalina Island/Pimu CA @sz4d #NSFfunded
This video is showing part of of the epidote blueschist melange in the Catalina Schist. The thickness of this unit is several 10s to >100s of meters so that fault is really more like a tabular fault zone deforming by a mix of brittle and ductile features. We love subduction!
@CailCon @sz4d Thanks . How the depth 30km is predicted ? From mineralogical assemblage?
@CailCon @sz4d wow this video made me want to ditch my continental strike-slip faults and become a subduction scientist
@CailCon @sz4d Wow! Cailey! That is so cool! Is this one of the target exhumed sites?
@CailCon @sz4d Thanks for sharing this Cailey. Is this NW part of the island?
