Every single time I’m getting asked by people who are just starting out with game development, my advice is usually that the best way to start is by just trying to copy a ‘simple’ game that already exists and taking things from there. The fact of the matter is that you don’t know what you don’t know when you’ve not worked on games yet and usually people assume that it’s easy to make one of those old 8 or 16 bit games, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m sure even most senior game developers would go through quite some struggles if they’d try to make their version of Super Mario Bros. It looks simple, but it isn’t. And one can learn a great deal from understanding how intricate the controls and all that was already even back then. So start there. Take something like Pong, start with just the basics. Once you’ve got something that works, try to see what you can come up with to make it even more fun than the original. Implement some extras, work on the juice… there’s a ton that can be done to make even a simple ‘paddle’ game like Pong insanely fun. Case in point, Windjammers on the NeoGeo was basically just Pong on steroids and it’s a marvelous game! The thing that scares me a lot is that we’ve got a generation of game devs coming up that try to skip the basics. They buy some asset pack or some project from someone else and then just expand on that without really understanding any of the core components on a deep level. We’ve seen the same thing happening with Level Design. I’ve interviewed quite a lot of Level Designers in recent years that had a decade or more of experience working in AAA that only ever worked on open world stuff where they never got a chance to learn the basics. And if they then have to make something from scratch, they wonder why they can’t perform or what is even asked of them. Take it back to the roots and try to understand every discipline from the ground up!

This is great advice. Just start making games. Any games. That's how you learn. DOOM was my 90th game.

If you're trying to get into game design my advice is stop fucking thinking about "game design", stop watching video essays and game design analysis videos, and just fucking make a ton of little games with the design based on nothing but gut instinct.

I was already 52 when I decided to become independent. I was told to get retired by my family and ppl around me but friends in the world who are devoting their lives for creatives said to me that “there’re ppl out there waiting for your work so keep creating for them”.🌈🐋🦀🐟
