Is plug-in (balcony) solar legal in your state, and will it pay off? Free US checker: state laws read in the statute, savings for your address and direction.canipluginsolar.comJoined September 2026
US balcony solar: does your meter spin backward? Denver, 800 W railing kit, about half its power goes out through the meter. Yearly savings:
• Exports credited: $147
• Ignored: $74
• Counted as usage: $1 (+$86 with a 50 W always-on load)
No signed state law sets a credit.
US balcony solar in winter, Boston, 800 W kit upright on a south railing:
• Dec–Feb: ~230 kWh made, ~40% used at home, $27 saved
• Jun–Aug: ~130 kWh made, ~80% used at home, $31 saved
More power, less saved: winter output comes in a short midday burst.
Can a US balcony solar kit run your AC? Phoenix, 800 W, summer:
• On a railing: ~110 kWh, nearly all used by the fridge and router. AC gains $2 at most.
• Tilted 30° on a patio: ~370 kWh, 220 to the grid. Up to $34 if AC runs in daylight.
Trims the AC bill. Doesn't run the AC.
A US balcony solar kit feeds a wall outlet. A generator must never.
Generator: makes its own wave, can backfeed the lines outside, a risk to line workers (CPSC).
Kit: follows the grid, stops within 2 s if it goes.
The catch: unplugged in the sun, its blades can stay live 2 s.
Same balcony solar kit, three US homes, three to-do lists:
• Utah, owner: a certified kit
• Maine, 800 W: electrician, own circuit, utility notice in 30 days
• Virginia renter, HOA: wait for Jan 1, state form, landlord notice, HOA rules
A free checklist for every state.
What size battery for US balcony solar? Match it to the kit.
Baltimore, extra savings a year:
• 400 W kit: +$14 (1 kWh; bigger adds nothing)
• 800 W: +$45 (1 kWh), +$63 (2 kWh)
• 1,200 W: +$95 (2 kWh), +$116 (4 kWh)
How does a plug-in solar kit match the grid's phase?
It doesn't make its own wave. Its inverter locks onto your outlet's 60 Hz wave and pushes current in step.
Your outlet uses one of your two hot legs; the kit follows that one.
Grid down: it must stop within 2 seconds.
US plug-in solar and your breaker:
A 1,400 W hair dryer + 1,000 W iron on a 15 A circuit = 20 A. The breaker trips.
Add an 800 W kit in full sun: the breaker sees 13.3 A and stays on. The wire past the kit still carries 20 A.
Fix: a circuit with nothing heavy on it.
@JanetJennababin A detail the headline skips: of those 10 states, 6 have laws in force today (CO, CT, ME, MD, UT, VT). California, New Hampshire and Virginia take effect Jan 1, 2027, and New Jersey on Mar 1, 2027. Until then, the utility's normal rules apply. General info, not legal advice.
What a balcony solar kit saves in the US depends on what your home runs all the time.
800 W, south railing, Los Angeles, savings a year by always-on load:
• 50 W: $45
• 150 W: $106
• 300 W: $161
• 500 W: $192
A kit only saves what your home uses at that moment.
@DanielPAldrich One date to add: New Jersey's Garden State Balcony Solar Act was signed Sep 1 but takes effect Mar 1, 2027. From then, up to 1,200 W per home, no utility approval or fee, and a tenant gives the landlord at least 14 days' written notice. General info, not legal advice.
