DEAR GAY MEN, WE CANNOT DEMAND ACCEPTANCE WHILE WITHHOLDING IT FROM OTHERS Imagine finally finding someone you connect with, someone who makes you feel seen and understood, only to have them pull away after you share a part of yourself you cannot change. A gay friend once told me 2 years ago about someone he had been talking to for weeks. They had a genuine connection, but when the person shared that they were intersex, he decided not to pursue the relationship. That conversation stayed with me. I understand that nobody owes anyone a relationship, and attraction cannot be forced. But intersex people deserve to be treated with the same kindness, dignity, and respect as everyone else. Being intersex does not make someone less worthy of love, affection, or companionship. Intersex people are also part of our broader LGBTQIA+ community, though everyone's identity and experience is different. We know what it feels like to want acceptance. Perhaps we should remember to extend that same compassion to others. How can we ask the world to accept us while forgetting that others deserve that same understanding?

Noticed how “success stories” always end with I made it from nothing to everything? What about the story that says, I survived? No fancy ending, just, I’m still here. Made mistakes. Fell. Got back up. Still standing. That’s success too. We just don’t clap for it enough.
