Alright, warriors just starting your pixel art journey…! 🎨Taking that first step is huge, but it's easy to feel lost. "Just have fun" is great advice, but not knowing where to start can be frustrating. So I'd like to share a simple step-by-step roadmap based on my experience! 🙆 ① Start with a single color It’s totally fine to start by expressing something as a single-colored shape. Focus on getting the shape as clean as you can. There are certain rules and techniques for cleaning up shapes, but let’s put those aside for now. (You can learn more later by looking closely at other people’s work or finding a good tutorial.) For now, think of it as simply removing unnecessary spikes and parts that stick out. ② Add a shadow color Next, add a shadow color and try using two colors for a single element. (For example: skin color + skin shadow. Hair color + hair shadow.) As a general rule, your shadow color should be dark enough for you to recognize, “Yep, that’s a shadow.” Try making it noticeably darker rather than just slightly darker. More specifically, rather than choosing two colors that are equally strong and competing with each other, try choosing colors that feel like they complement each other. ③ If you don’t know where to put the shadows… Try looking at a simple sphere study, like the ones you often see in basic drawing practice. For now, it’s enough to imagine light coming roughly from the upper-left, with the shadow falling toward the lower-right. Don’t worry if you can’t get it right. If you can look at your result and recognize, “Hey, these two colors made it look three-dimensional,” that’s good enough. ④ Add even more colors Try increasing the variations in your shadow colors by adding either—or both—of these: 🖌️ A midtone — a color between your main color and shadow color 🖌️ Shadow 2 — a color darker than Shadow 1 A midtone can also be used as an anti-aliasing technique, but let’s put that aside for now. Instead, try using it as a lighter shadow on the upper-left side (the side receiving more light). On the other hand, use Shadow 2 toward the lower-right side, where the shadow is deeper. If you can look at it and feel that it has become even more three-dimensional than when you were using just the two colors in Step ②, congratulations—you leveled up! As you work through these steps, don’t think of it as “I got better at pixel art.” Instead, think of it as: “I can do more things with pixel art now.” The more things you can do, the more things you can draw—and the more things you can bring to life. There’s no need to rush. A little at a time is perfectly fine. I also want to keep adding to the things I can do, little by little. Let’s keep improving together. 😌
